Gamification is changing how users build long-term health habits

StepBet is a platform that blends personalized step goals with group competitions and financial incentives. Operated by WayBetter, which specializes in behavior change games, the company believes this innovation can drive long-term behavior change in the fitness landscape. Kerri Walsh, Chief Business Development Officer at StepBet, spoke with Athletech News about how gamification can foster consistency, community and motivation in fitness.

StepBet tailors daily step goals to individual activity levels and incorporates a financial component that makes staying active more engaging. The company has paid out millions of dollars in winnings to users.

“B“By making fitness a rewarding habit rather than a chore, we help individuals stay motivated,” Walsh told ATN. “Our platform is designed to tap into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation—people love the satisfaction of hitting their goals, but the financial incentive gives them that extra push to stay committed.”

Research has shown that financial rewards can be a strong motivator for behavior change, but StepBet wants to ensure that these incentives lead to sustained engagement rather than just short-term participation.

“Our challenges typically range from 2 to 6 weeks, striking the perfect balance between immediate motivation and long-term habit formation,” Walsh said. “We want people to start a challenge and feel that sense of accomplishment, but the real goal is to create a stepping stone for a more active lifestyle.”

She added that StepBet’s dynamic goal-setting model ensures that the challenges remain accessible yet effective. “We take into account a person’s past activity levels and gradually push them toward improvement, making the experience both achievable and rewarding.”

The platform’s setup, where friends invite friends, also helps strengthen engagement and foster long-term participation. This ecosystem makes movement more enjoyable and habitual.

“Community is at the heart of StepBet,” Walsh explained. “Our in-app social features allow users to share progress, exchange motivational tips and hold each other accountable. The camaraderie built through these challenges is what keeps people coming back.”

Beyond motivation, Walsh also sees StepBet as a tool for reshaping how people perceive fitness. “Many people think of exercise as something they ‘have’ to do, but we’re changing that mindset,” she said. “StepBet reframes movement as something fun, social and rewarding.”

Looking ahead, Walsh foresees continued advancements in wearables, AI-driven personalization and interactive social connections shaping the future of fitness.

“We are committed to investing in these areas to stay ahead of the innovation curve,” she stated. “Technology is evolving rapidly and we see a future where fitness platforms like ours become even more adaptive, intuitive and integrated into people’s daily lives.”

She emphasized that StepBet is designed for a broad range of users. “Whether you’re just starting out, a seasoned fitness enthusiast, or simply looking for a new way to stay motivated, StepBet is for everyone. Movement should be accessible, fun and rewarding for all.”

The robotic AI-powered massage company has seen explosive growth through partnerships with major fitness and wellness brands

Aescape, a lifestyle robotics company pioneering AI-powered massage for recovery, has secured $83 million in a strategic funding round led by Valor Equity Partners. With this latest investment, Aescape’s total funding reaches $128 million to help with national expansion and operational growth. The round also saw continued investment from firm Alumni Ventures, as well as NBA Champion and All-Star Kevin Love.

Aescape first introduced its AI-powered automated massage technology in select Equinox locations across New York City. Equinox then extended its partnership with Aescape to 60 locations nationwide and is now the first fitness brand to integrate AI-driven massage technology at scale.

“Aescape immediately resonated with our members, offering a private, effective and highly personalized massage experience—on their time,” said James Gu, Sr. Director of Spa at Equinox. “This partnership reflects our commitment to providing the most advanced recovery solutions available and we’re excited to bring it to more locations across the country.”

Beyond Equinox, Aescape has secured partnerships with major hospitality and wellness leaders, including select locations of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Marriott and Ritz-Carlton properties across North America. It also recently partnered with World Spa in Brooklyn, a luxury spa with Eastern European banyas, Finnish saunas and Moroccan hammams. The expansion comes as the $19 billion massage therapy industry faces a labor shortage, with over 29,000 unfilled therapist positions.

“Aescape has demonstrated remarkable growth in just six months since its launch,” said Jonathan Shulkin, Partner and Co-President at Valor Equity Partners. “Their AI-driven approach is unlocking new possibilities in data-informed, personalized care, driving revenue for partners while delivering precision-tailored experiences. Eric and his team are creating an entirely new category of robotics-powered wellness and we’re delighted to continue to support their expansion.”

Aescape has bolstered its leadership team with key hires from Apple and The Economist Group to support its rapid expansion. Kimberly Miller joined as Chief Marketing Officer, bringing over two decades of experience in scaling high-growth brands. Eswar Priyadarshan, formerly of Apple and Adobe, has been appointed Senior Vice President of Engineering.

Aescape has also introduced a new tiered B2B model, allowing small and medium-sized businesses to offer AI-powered massage experiences. The model includes Aescape Essential, for general wellness businesses and Aescape Lux, for high-end wellness centers and premium hospitality partners, with exclusive features and premium app customization.

“Our first six months focused on strategic partnerships and introducing fully autonomous robotic massage to consumers, driving high utilization and repeat usage rates,” said Eric Litman, Founder and CEO of Aescape. “Now, we’re doubling down on deepening relationships with existing partners, onboarding new ones and expanding our library of massage offerings as member needs evolve.”

The app is enhancing the officiating experience for the NHL

As the 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series approaches, the League has introduced the NHL Watch Comms App, developed by Presidio for Apple Watch. The app will provide the league with real-time, in-game situational updates directly on their wrists.

For the first time in an outdoor NHL game, referees and linesmen can use the NHL Watch Comms App to receive notifications, including game clock countdowns, penalty clock updates and information on penalized players. The app is designed to improve game management without glancing at arena scoreboards.

Unlike traditional indoor arenas with large overhead scoreboards, outdoor venues pose additional challenges for officials in tracking games. The NHL Watch Comms App aims to bridge this gap by providing referees with haptic notifications that deliver real-time alerts to manage penalty situations and game timing. The NHL Watch Comms App has over 90% adoption across the League.

The NHL partnered with Apple and Presidio to develop this custom application, ensuring integration with Apple Watch’s capabilities. The league is already exploring further applications for the Watch Comms App, including direct communication between the four on-ice officials, arena-based officials and the League’s Toronto operations center. Future iterations may also include communication between officials and coaches, broadening the scope of in-game technology to enhance strategic decision-making.

The NHL and Apple have previously collaborated on game-enhancing technology. Since 2017, Mac and iPad have helped coaches and players by providing real-time videos for in-game adjustments.

The brand is the first U.S. operator to introduce a franchise model for padel

Conquer Padel is the first U.S. operator to introduce a franchise model for padel, a fast-growing racquet sport. With its flagship location set to open in Tempe, Arizona, in the summer of 2025, Conquer Padel is hoping to expand the sport nationwide.

The Tempe flagship will feature five courts alongside amenities, including cold plunges, stretch areas, saunas, locker rooms, showers, and private office pods. The clubs will also feature networking spaces such as bars, lounge areas and grab-and-go food options.

As of 2024, the U.S. has seen a rapid rise in padel facilities, with more than 70 clubs and 400 courts, twice as many as the previous year. That number is expected to grow significantly, with projections estimating up to 15,000 courts by 2029.

Beyond Tempe, Conquer Padel has already outlined its expansion plans, with clubs set to launch in Phoenix, Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. The company’s corporate club development strategy is designed to establish a strong operational foundation, supporting franchise sales while creating opportunities for franchisees to purchase established locations within the Conquer Padel network.

“We are proud to bring Conquer Padel to life at a pivotal moment for the sport,” said Co-Founder Tom Konkowski. “Padel is at an inflection point in the U.S., experiencing explosive growth as demand surges nationwide. Racquet sports have never been more popular and we see an opportunity to redefine how people experience and connect through padel.”

With more than 1,500 pickleball franchise units awarded as of January 2025, according to the brand, the demand for social, racquet-based facilities is growing. Conquer Padel aims to award 50 franchise units in 2025, with a long-term goal of adding 25–100 new locations per year.

The cycling studio is investing in sustainability with its latest partnership

SoulCycle has introduced a new partnership with Uni, a zero-waste body care brand, for its post-ride experience in its studios across the U.S. and U.K. Beginning March 3rd, SoulCycle locker rooms will feature Uni’s Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner, Skin Shield Body Wash and an exclusive preview of Uni’s soon-to-be-released Face Cleanser. Riders can also use Uni’s 24-Hour Body Serum.

“At SoulCycle, we believe the experience doesn’t end when the ride is over—it extends to how our riders take care of themselves before and after class,” SoulCycle CEO Evelyn Webster told Athletech News. “We were drawn to Uni’s commitment to sustainability and high-performance formulations, making this partnership a great fit.”

Uni’s products are made with marine-derived ingredients. The Uni Marine Complex, a blend of ocean hydrators, antioxidants and minerals, is intended to help maintain the skin’s natural barrier.

Webster noted that the transition to Uni’s products was smooth and well-received.

“One of our priorities was ensuring that the products would be effective for all skin and hair types while aligning with our sustainability goals,” she continued. “We also wanted our instructors and studio teams to test the products before launch and the feedback has been incredibly positive.”

SoulCycle’s decision to partner with Uni was also influenced by the brand’s approach to reducing waste. Uni’s refillable packaging and sustainably sourced ingredients align with SoulCycle’s efforts to create a more environmentally conscious studio experience.

“Strategic partnerships should feel natural and aligned with shared values,” said Webster. “We’re not just looking at what goes in our locker rooms—we want to create meaningful touchpoints that bring the collaboration to life in ways that resonate with our community.”

SoulCycle has invested in partnerships recently, including BetterHelp, Dr. B and FitBit, to deliver value to customers across mental health, financial accessibility and wearables. This summer, the brand also hosted a Wellness Weekend in the Hamptons, which included brand partners like Allyoos and Hyperice.

The tech giant’s watch has received clearance for a feature that can provide life-saving intervention

Google has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Loss of Pulse Detection feature on the Pixel Watch 3. The innovation can detect a loss of pulse and, if the user is unresponsive, prompt a call to emergency services to potentially provide life-saving intervention in critical moments.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests account for more than 356,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, with over half of these cases occurring without a witness. Google’s Loss of Pulse Detection aims to address this medical challenge.

The feature was first introduced in Fall 2024 for Pixel Watch 3 users in select EU countries. It has since expanded across 14 European nations. Now, with FDA clearance secured, eligible users in the U.S. can access the technology.

Loss of Pulse Detection leverages a multi-check, AI-based algorithm with the Pixel Watch 3’s multipath heart rate sensor to identify potential pulse loss. If the user is unresponsive, the device initiates an alert to emergency services.

Google tested the algorithm over hundreds of thousands of hours of data. The company also worked with a range of experts, including cardiologists, global resuscitation authorities and frontline EMS professionals. Apeer-reviewed study on Loss of Pulse Detection was published today in Nature, a respected scientific journal.

Since its release in late 2024, the Pixel Watch 3 has helped Google expand its presence in the smartwatch market. The latest model introduced a larger 45mm size, improved battery efficiency and expanded health tracking features through Fitbit integration. Google’s estimated 24-hour battery life does trail behind some competitors., however. Despite being a relatively new player in the smartwatch space, Google’s focus on advanced health monitoring suggests a long-term strategy of differentiation through medical-grade technology, potentially bridging the gap between traditional consumer wearables and regulated medical devices.

The PhD hopes to empower women with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate menopause effectively

For too long, menopause has been treated as a taboo topic. Maria Luque, PhD, hopes to change the conversation around the transition. A health science professor, fitness expert and menopause specialist, Luque is on a mission to empower women with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate menopause with confidence.

Luque serves as Halle Berry’s menopause coach, guiding the Oscar-winning actress through her personal journey as part of Respin Health, the just-launched wellness initiative Berry co-founded. Her expertise in menopause and fitness is built on decades of research and hands-on experience.

“My background as a health science professor means I’ve always been committed to science-backed strategies, ensuring that everything I teach is rooted in evidence,” she explained. “But science alone isn’t enough—real change happens when knowledge meets practical, individualized application. That’s where my 20 years of coaching experience come in.”

She has spent years guiding women through the challenges of menopause, helping them understand their bodies and build effective habits.

“This dual perspective—bridging research with real-world coaching—defines my approach,” she said. “It’s not about generic advice; it’s about creating personalized strategies that empower women to thrive.”

When Halle Berry set out to experience the Respin Health pilot program, she wanted to do so as a participant.

“She understands the power of coaching and community,” Luque shared. “She wanted to go through the process herself to fully embrace what we’re building. With my extensive experience and personalized approach, she chose me as her coach to guide her through this journey. It’s been an incredible collaboration because she’s deeply committed to sharing real, science-backed solutions for menopause. She embodies the message that every woman deserves this level of support.”

A cornerstone of Luque’s menopause coaching is strength training, which she insists is critical for women going through perimenopause and menopause.

“Resistance training is non-negotiable for women in perimenopause and menopause,” she stated. “It’s not just a fitness trend—it’s backed by decades of science showing its critical role in preserving muscle, metabolism and bone density, as well as improving cognitive function and mental well-being.”

Declining estrogen levels during menopause contribute to muscle loss, which in turn affects metabolism, increases fat storage and weakens bones.

“Strength training is the most effective way to counteract these changes and maintain long-term vitality,” she said. “But the benefits go beyond just the physical. Strength training has a profound impact on mental health and body image. Instead of focusing on what’s being ‘lost,’ strength training shifts the perspective to what’s being gained—strength, capability, confidence and a renewed sense of control over one’s body. Studies also show that resistance training reduces anxiety, depression and stress, making it a key tool for overall well-being.”

Luque emphasized that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach and that menopause care has been fragmented for too long, often leaving women to navigate the transition on their own. Respin Health is working to change that by offering proactive, personalized coaching.

“For too long, menopause support has been reactive—women are left to figure it out themselves or rely on outdated, one-size-fits-all advice,” she said. “At Respin Health, we’re changing that by providing science-backed, personalized coaching that is proactive, precise and deeply personal.”

One of the biggest gaps Luque and Respin Health aim to fill is empowerment.

“We don’t just offer guidance—we give women the tools, education and support to become their own best advocates,” she says. “Instead of passive, single-dimensional care, we create tailored solutions that help women understand their bodies, make informed choices and take control of their health.”

Another key differentiator is community.

“Menopause can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be,” Luque stated. “Women thrive when they have a supportive space to share experiences, ask questions and learn from one another. Our coaching model brings women together so they can feel heard, validated and empowered.”

Luque’s message is clear: menopause isn’t something to fear—it’s a new chapter and with the right tools, it can be a strong one.

“At the core of my coaching is this simple truth: movement should feel like a gift, not a punishment,” she said. “When we make that shift, everything else—consistency, strength, confidence—falls into place.”

The boots boast improved circulation and lymphatic drainage to improve recovery

Recovery is all the rage right now, and compression boots are no exception. The Therabody RecoveryAir Pro boots are designed to improve circulation and provide lymphatic drainage to speed up recovery and reduce muscle fatigue. With many boots on the market, how do the RecoveryAir Pro boots stack up?

Pros

The control device has simple navigational buttons that are easy to follow to customize your experience. The boots also have different modes, like recovery, warm-up, isolation, interval, and pro. Users can select a duration from 10 minutes to 90 minutes (or continual) and then pressures that range from 20 to 100 mmHg. The control device is also sleek and well-designed, so it blends into different design environments.

The four chambers of the boot were extremely effective, particularly with my feet. As a runner, my feet are often neglected, but the intense pressure and hold/release definitely reduced muscle fatigue. The boots apply graded pressure to the lower limbs, with gradual pressure from the feet to the groin. RecoveryAir also uses non-porous medical-grade material with internal overlapping chambers to prevent the boots from becoming smelly.

Apart from the physical benefits, it’s also nice to have a forced slowdown in the middle of one’s day. The physical act of sitting, setting a timer, and using the boots provides a nice respite for busy users. The Therabody “Fast Flush” Technology, however, allows the boots to inflate or deflate in just 60 seconds. Users can also control the pressure from the Therabody app from mobile devices.

Cons

The control device and the boots are not the easiest to lug around; you need a side table and a good chair (hopefully one that reclines) to effectively use the boots to their fullest extent.

It’s no secret that compression boots are expensive (around $1300), so taking them for a test run before fully investing is likely best. Similarly, ensuring that you can dedicate the time daily to the boots is important for long-term effect, particularly when training for a race.

Overall, the boots are a great investment if you train frequently or experience delayed onset muscle soreness. While the boots aren’t cheap, if you’re hoping to invest in the best compression boots, look no further.

The tennis champion and entrepreneur has joined the gamification walking app as an investor and ambassador

Tennis champion and entrepreneur Venus Williams has invested in the walking game. WeWard, the app that rewards over 20 million users for every step they take, has announced Williams as both an investor and ambassador.

The World Health Organization reports that 31% of adults and 80% of adolescents fall short of recommended physical activity levels. WeWard’s reveals that many Americans walk only about half of the daily steps they should, ranking among the lowest in walking activity compared to other developed nations.

In a 50-second video campaign, Venus Williams was seen engaging with the WeWard app—tracking her steps, and celebrating a milestone during a tennis match.

Credit: WeWard

“A large part of staying well and active is simply by moving your body whichever way you can,” Williams said. “With WeWard, walking becomes a fun and rewarding experience, and I’m excited to help inspire people to take that first step towards a healthier lifestyle.”

This partnership is also about giving back; WeWard has pledged an initial donation of $25,000 to CARE, the charity of Williams’s choice, which focuses on alleviating global poverty through improved health, education, and economic opportunities for women and communities. WeWard will also host a month-long “Venus Williams Championship” within the app. Users’ collective steps can unlock increasing donation amounts, potentially culminating in a total donation of $40,000.

Founded in 2019 by Yves Benchimol, WeWard gamifies the walking experience. Users can track their daily steps and redeem rewards ranging from cash deposits and retail gifts to charitable donations. With strategic partnerships with over 1,500 major brands—including names like Amazon, Adidas, and Nike—the app touts an increase of nearly 25% increase in daily walking activity among its global user base. The recent expansion into 20 new countries and achieving over 1 million downloads in the U.S. signal a growing movement toward healthier lifestyles through simple, accessible activity.

“We couldn’t have found a better partner to help us inspire more people to walk,” Benchimol said. “Venus has been a huge inspiration throughout her multifaceted career, and her energy and advocacy perfectly align with our mission.”

Supernatural recreates the aesthetic of her original programs, from the workout attire to the high-energy coaching style. The experience therefore feels both familiar and fresh.

The program includes a mixed selection of workouts to cater to different preferences and fitness levels, including Flow with Jane Fonda (a rhythmic, full-body cardio workout), Box with Jane Fonda & Ludacris (a high-energy boxing session), and Jane Fonda: Stretching (which is mobility-focused), among others.

One of the most fun aspects of Supernatural is that it places users in beautiful locations. From the peaks of Machu Picchu to the depths of Ethiopian volcanoes, the scenic backdrops add an element of escapism that makes the workouts feel more like an adventure than a chore.

The playlist for these workouts leans heavily into the retro theme, featuring tracks like Olivia Newton-John’s Physical. The combination of movement and music enhances motivation, making it easier to stay engaged.

One of the defining features of Fonda’s original workout tapes was her ability to motivate people through the screen. That same energy carries over into Supernatural, even through the headset.

Cons

The workout is only available on Supernatural, which means users need a Meta Quest headset and an active subscription to the platform, which could be prohibitive for those hesitant to invest. There may also be an adjustment period for those new to VR fitness. Sweating with the headset on is not the most pleasant experience, so if you’re planning on really pushing yourself to the limit, be prepared to frequently clean your headset.

While this series offers a well-rounded selection of workouts, those looking for advanced strength training, heavy resistance work, or highly structured endurance sessions may find the offerings too light. Supernatural is designed for immersive cardio and movement-focused fitness, so it may not replace a more traditional gym or studio-based routine.

Jane Fonda’s collaboration with Supernatural is a great blend of nostalgia and innovation. Whether you’re a longtime follower of her workouts or simply curious about the intersection of VR and exercise, it’s a unique experience worth exploring if you are willing to make the upfront investment.

The digital fitness content platform and the corporate health innovation company have expanded their partnership

Funxtion, the digital fitness content platform, and EGYM, a fitness technology and corporate health innovation company, have announced an expansion of their strategic partnership. Together, the companies aim to bridge the gap between traditional gym experiences and digital offerings.

The heart of the partnership is the integration of Funxtion’s FX POD with EGYM’s ecosystem. In April 2023, the brands initially collaborated to embed Funxtions content into EGYM’s Trainer and Member apps. The companies have since collaborated with operators like Fitness First, World Gym, the Gym Group, and YMCA facilities.

“Our partnership with Funxtion aligns perfectly with our vision to make the gym experience more connected, efficient, and effective,” said Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, CEO of EGYM. “Integrating Funxtion’s content with our Member and Trainer Apps not only unlocks new business opportunities for our enterprise customers but also elevates the end-user experience.”

Funxtion’s FX POD offers curated content that integrates with the broader gym environment, designed to improve individual and small-group training sessions. As part of the partnership, Funxtion will also develop an extensive library of digital fitness content, including single exercises and how-to videos covering equipment from leading manufacturers. Egym will also replace its exercise animations with Funxtion’s single exercise library.

“We are thrilled to take our partnership with EGYM to the next level,” said Ernst de Neef, CEO of Funxtion. “By integrating our FX POD with EGYM’s open ecosystem, we’re creating a fitness experience that is smarter, more personalized, and more engaging for users. At Funxtion, we believe in delivering innovative digital solutions that help operators boost member engagement and increase retention, and this collaboration allows us to do just that in an even more impactful way.”

The wearables company has introduced the Fertile Window feature to provide individuals with deeper insights into their fertility

Oura has introduced the Fertile Window feature to provide individuals with deeper insights into their fertility through continuous physiological tracking. A study conducted by Oura found that the Oura Ring significantly outperformed the traditional calendar method in predicting ovulation, particularly for those with irregular cycles.

“We’re deeply committed to helping all of our members understand their bodies better,” says Shyamal Patel, SVP of Science at Oura. “By giving individuals more insight into their Fertile Window, we hope to improve body literacy, cycle awareness, and overall reproductive health. Whether members are trying to conceive or learn more about their bodies, it is helpful for them to know their fertile window, which can also feel very empowering.”

Oura’s Fertile Window prediction is different from other fertility trackers because it relies on physiological data rather than solely calendar tracking. The feature has been validated by a study published in Journal of Medical Internet Research, showing that it can detect 96.4% of ovulations with an average error of just ±1.26 days, more accurate than many traditional methods, especially for those with irregular cycles.

“Fertile Window is underpinned by the physiology method, using continuous temperature sensing and advanced signal processing,” Patel told Athletech News. “Our findings showed that individuals with irregular cycles saw a drastic improvement in accuracy, with ovulation detection errors reduced from 6.63 days (calendar method) to just 1.48 days. A standout finding from the study was our performance with irregular cycles. While the calendar method had an average error of 6.63 days for these participants, our physiology method maintained an error of just 1.48 days, showcasing the robust nature of our algorithm across diverse physiological variations.”

The Fertile Window feature is part of Oura’s broader focus on women’s health, with other offerings such as Cycle Insights, Pregnancy Insights, and the Perimenopause Report. Collaborations with platforms like Clue, Flo, Glow, and Natural Cycles further enhance the depth of insights available to users.

In a discussion with Athletech News earlier this year, Oura’s CEO spoke about how the company is disrupting healthcare. The company recently raised over $200 million in Series D, bringing its valuation to $5.2 billion. Female health plays a key part of its strategy, with many users enticed by the company’s ability to combine sleep, physiological, and reproductive data insights.

“A top priority in fulfilling our mission is continuing to deliver meaningful products for our female members, including detailed insights and guidance about their unique bodies and overall health,” Patel stated. “Women’s health encompasses not only reproductive health, which is why we take a holistic approach to well-being, no matter your stage of life.”

Recent research also analyzed data from over 100,000 female members, uncovering significant trends in sleep loss and cardiovascular changes during perimenopause.

“The report’s findings confirmed that perimenopause is a time when women experience a range of physical and mental changes that can affect all aspects of their lives,” Patel noted. “Of note, data showed a progressive loss in sleep that results in up to two hours of lost sleep each week as women transition from perimenopause to postmenopause. Additionally, heart rate variability, an important marker of cardiovascular health, declines 20 to 30 percent in early and late perimenopausal women.”

Oura continues to invest in women’s health through research and product development, working with academic institutions to advance scientific understanding in this field.

“We’re continuing to invest heavily in women’s health features, emphasizing our commitment to helping women understand their bodies better,” Patel concluded. “Expect to see continued advancements in our ability to provide women with personalized, data-driven insights.”

The full-body MRI company seeks to advance and expand preventative healthcare offerings globally

Prenuvo, the full-body MRI company, has announced that it achieved $100 million in revenue last year and secured $120 million in funding to expand its AI-powered early detection technology further. The investment round was led by Forerunner Ventures, Left Lane Capital, and Felicis, the same backers behind Oura Health.

With newly secured FDA clearance, Prenuvo is launching a new body composition analysis this spring, alongside expanded brain and metabolic health assessments.

“Prenuvo is leading a movement to make proactive healthcare accessible and transformative for everyone,” said CEO Andrew Lacy. “We’re introducing a new approach to early detection that empowers individuals to take control of their health before symptoms emerge. This isn’t just about healthcare; it’s about reimagining how we approach health, using cutting-edge technology and world-class expertise to prevent disease and help people live longer, healthier lives.”

Prenuvo’s newly FDA-cleared AI-powered body composition analysis provides a non-invasive breakdown of visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, liver fat, muscle volumes, and key abdominal organs. The company is also introducing a next-generation brain health scan, offering critical data on cognitive function and early indicators of neurodegenerative diseases. Prenuvo is launching a comprehensive blood biomarker assessment, providing insights into metabolic, cardiovascular, hormonal, and immune health. These capabilities will first be available through Prenuvo Enhanced, a bundled offering launching in Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and New York, with additional locations rolling out in the spring.

Prenuvo has surpassed 110,000 members and uncovered over 1.4 million personalized health insights. The company is scaling with 15 new clinics, including its first international locations in Europe and Australia.

“With only 2.5% of healthcare spending focused on preventative medicine, the US system waits for people to become sick before intervening,” said Brian O’Malley of Forerunner Ventures. “Consumers have grown tired of this and are responding with their own wallets. Prenuvo is the preeminent solution for a comprehensive understanding of one’s health, giving today’s patients unprecedented levels of knowledge to not just understand but proactively intervene in the challenges that arise as we all age. Longevity is the new luxury, and Prenuvo is democratizing access so that more can benefit from this.”

JetSet Pilates has announced a strategic investment from Purchase Capital to propel the brand’s expansion, fortifying its franchising capabilities, instructor training programs and overall client experiences. As part of the deal, Nicholas J. Singer, Founder and Managing Partner of Purchase Capital, has been appointed to the JetSet Pilates Board. The financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.

“2025 is an exciting year for JetSet with the unveiling of our premium access membership, enhanced technology to deliver a top-tier client experience and a new dedicated training facility for our instructors,” said Bert Albertse, CEO of JetSet Pilates. “The strategic investment from Purchase Capital comes at a pivotal time for our growth and will bring sophisticated financial acumen to ensure the scalability of the brand and deliver unparalleled franchise service and support.”

Founded in 2010, JetSet Pilates now includes 87 studios either open or in development, spanning major U.S. cities and international markets, including upcoming locations in Melbourne, Australia. The franchise fuses DJ-curated music with its Pilates workouts, creating a high-energy environment.

With the new investment, JetSet is launching a training academy and an elevated membership program, providing franchisees with the tools to create a premium and customized experience for their local markets. JetSet is preparing for the upcoming training hub for instructors and the debut of its luxury Mr. C Residences in Coconut Grove, Florida, the new home of the franchisor’s flagship studio. Last month, JetSet opened a new studio in Wellesley, the brand’s first location in New England, with plans to establish 3-5 studios in the area over the next few years.

“JetSet’s rapid growth and dedicated client base is a testament to the leadership team and their vision to deliver a unique and personalized experience,” said Singer. “We are excited to partner with Bert and the team to elevate a strong brand, support long-term expansion and facilitate entry into new markets.”

The fitness giant is deepening its commitment to elite running with the launch of a nationwide network of distance running clubs

Nike is demonstrating its commitment to elite running with the launch of Swoosh TC, a nationwide network of distance running clubs with hubs in Utah, Oregon, and Arizona. Nike is no stranger to elite running, with some of the earlier innovations in footwear and competitive training. Swoosh TC is bringing the company back to its roots, investing in structured training programs, experienced coaching, and dedicated facilities for elite runners.

The three different clubs are Flagstaff, Arizona (for altitude benefits), Eugene, Oregon (for its proximity to Nike, Oregon University, and Hayward Field), and Provo, Utah. The head coaches of the groups are Jerry Schumacher, Mike Smith, and Diljeet Taylor, respectively. Some Nike-sponsored athletes who have their own coaches will have access to the Swoosh TC locations and facilities.

Nike’s initiative comes as other brands introduce new models for supporting professional runners. Companies like On and Tracksmith are also investing in the sport. On Athletics Club has a dedicated training facility in Boulder, Colorado and offers athletes health insurance as well as injury and pregnancy leave. Tracksmith has hired elite runners as full-time employees and developed an NIL program for college athletes.

The program also comes at a time when women’s running is gaining more visibility and investment, which Nike has been looking to strengthen. As the competitive landscape shifts, Nike’s approach appears to emphasize structure in training programs for elite athletes.

The workout studio capitalizes on combining movement and fun to drive engagement

In a crowded fitness landscape, fitness studios are capitalizing on fun and community to drive business. Fly Dance Fitness has gained popularity for its dance-based approach to exercise. CEO Stacey Marks describes the philosophy as shifting from “getting through” a workout to actively looking forward to it.

“We believe dance-based exercise is a celebration of what our bodies can accomplish,” Marks told Athletech News. “That’s why we host epic fitness parties seven days a week and share snippets of our classes on social media. Millions of people worldwide have resonated with our videos because they see authenticity and envision themselves dancing alongside friends, reliving their clubbing days.”

The mental health benefits of dance are a key factor in the program’s success. “Our clients often call Fly Dance Fitness their ‘happy place,’” COO Kari Schroeter told ATN. “They tell us that our classes have improved their mental health as much as their physical fitness. The combination of an intense workout with a heavy focus on fun gives clients permission to get silly while also getting in a great sweat.”

credit: Sam Moore, So Many Moments

Fly Dance Fitness was originally founded in Sarasota, Florida, and quickly became a popular fitness destination. Marks and Schroeter met at the studio in 2017 while balancing motherhood and their passion for fitness.

“I was introduced to Fly Dance Fitness through a mommy bootcamp,” said Schroeter. “I immediately fell in love with the energy of the classes and the supportive community.”

Both became instructors and grew increasingly involved in the brand. “We were both already instructors when the original owner approached us about purchasing the business,” Marks explained. “We took an educated leap of faith and bought Fly Dance Fitness together. Our strengths complement each other perfectly—Kari’s attention to detail and customer service, and my creativity and social media experience.”

The decision to franchise Fly Dance Fitness stemmed from increasing demand beyond its Sarasota location. “Our focus is on finding the right franchisees,” said Marks. “We’ve received over a thousand franchise applications in the first year alone, but we want to be intentional with growth. We’ve awarded nine franchise locations so far, in Florida, Colorado, Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Utah, and there are more on the way.”

Ensuring quality expansion is a priority. “We personally interview every franchise candidate to make sure they align with our values,” added Schroeter. “We’re not just growing for the sake of numbers—we want to build a brand that has a lasting impact on people’s lives.”

Fly Dance Fitness offers a mix of fun and fitness, with choreography designed to be accessible yet engaging. “We’ve developed a formula that keeps choreography easy enough to follow for beginners while remaining challenging for regulars,” said Marks. “For example, in Throw Down, we blend new routines with repeat routines so clients feel a sense of mastery while still learning fresh moves.”

The program includes multiple class formats: Throw Down, a dance fitness format, So Fly Step, with adjustable intensity, Sculpt Weight, a free weight class, and Sculpt Circuit, a mid of plyometrics, HIIT, and functional exercises.

Scientific studies support the benefits of dance for mental health. “Studies show that dance is the number one modality to combat depression,” said Marks. “That research has been a major inspiration for us. We see first-hand how our classes improve mental health and build a sense of community.”

Mark Hyman’s comprehensive health company is designed to take a more preventative approach to medicine

Dr. Mark Hyman is one of the most prominent proponents of functional medicine and a co-founder of Function Health, a membership-based diagnostic health platform company.  He was inspired to found the company based on the shortcomings of traditional healthcare. In an interview with Athletech News last fall, Dr. Hyman noted, “I saw that our system prioritized outdated processes and profits, with people only visiting doctors on a reactive basis. That experience inspired me and the other founding members of Function to create a new way for people to manage their health and live their best lives.”

Function Health has grown a lot since its founding in 2021, with its beta release in April 2023 and its expansion across the country. The company is expanding its focus on athletes, most recently with a partnership with the NBPA.

“Athletes push their limits daily, yet standard checkups often miss key performance insights,” Emeline Minor, who works in Special Projects at Function, told Athletech News. “Cortisol and testosterone impact recovery, while glucose and insulin regulate sustained energy. Monitoring these markers helps athletes train smarter and avoid burnout. Key nutrients like vitamin D aid muscle repair and injury prevention, benefiting anyone engaged in physical activity.”

To see what the future of preventative and performance-based health might hold, I decided to test Function Health by going to a nearby Quest Diagnostics. I took the tests over two separate sessions to get the results of more than 100 biomarkers for a view of my health across many dimensions, from my heart, hormones, immunity, thyroid, and more. So how did Function stack up compared to other preventative health services?

Pros

For $499 per year, members get two rounds of testing: an initial assessment and then another test three to six months later to see how their numbers are evolving. After your initial signup, you are asked to give a detailed summary of your medical history and medications. Next, you schedule your tests at Quest Diagnostics. I also appreciated the text reminders from Function in the days before the assessment on how best to prepare for the tests.

While Quest Diagnostics is not as comfortable as some other options for blood draws (for example, for InsideTracker, a professional came to my apartment), there are many locations around major cities, and there was almost no wait time.

For those who are squeamish with blood draws, the first round of testing required nearly six vials of blood. Because of the draining nature of such a blood draw, Function splits them into two separate appointments scheduled several days apart. The service recommended not doing any physical activity later that day, but I felt good enough to continue with my normal routine just a few hours later. For the second test, there was also a urine sample.

Although I had a handful of biomarkers out of range, my biological age was still a fair amount younger than my calendar age, which helped put my results into perspective and prevented any panic while I waited for the physician’s notes, which took a little more than a week. In addition, for the biomarkers out of range, clicking on each result yielded a summary of what it meant, its causes, foods to eat, foods to limit, supplements to take, and more. I thought the website’s design was fairly easy to use and click through, although I would have appreciated a snapshot view of all the biggest next steps for me to follow to improve my metrics.

One big benefit of Function is that the company essentially subsidizes the costs of all these tests; the phlebotomist at Quest Diagnostics told me that these tests normally cost far more than what Function charges. Although the company does not accept insurance, it is FSA/HSA eligible.

Cons

A small downside to the test is certain restrictions must be taken before, which is admittedly fairly typical of all blood tests. Users are not allowed to work out for 24 hours, take supplements for 72 hours, or eat certain foods, like fish (in case it spikes certain biomarker levels in your bloodstream) for a few days before. While a minor inconvenience, it’s worth calling out the small changes needed prior to the exam.

One other downside is the timing disparity between getting the results back and the clinician’s notes back, which can be up to 2 weeks. The clinician’s notes add more context to your results, and if any results are urgent, Function will call you immediately. With the results come recommendations about the best foods to eat, potential lifestyle changes, and any recommended follow-up tests. For those anxious to receive their results, the timing difference may cause some short-term panic, perhaps brought about by googling or WebMD searches.

I asked physicians unassociated with the brands about my results, and they noted that some of the biomarkers used were newer, without as much clinical research backing them. For example, measures like HDL Large, LDL Medium, and LDL Small were all part of the heart health measurements but represent newer ways to understand cholesterol. According to Dr. Hyman, this is the “most critical test” for understanding cholesterol health. However, some of these other physicians recommended focusing more on the more standard cholesterol numbers due to their proven nature. I wish there had been a clearer way to view which biomarkers were more clinically

Overall, Function is likely best for those who have existing medical conditions or deficiencies and want to track their progress, driving towards improvements on these health goals.

The technology company has launched an initiative dedicated to women’s health across four life stages

Therabody has unveiled “Therabody, for Her,” an initiative dedicated to women’s health across four critical life stages: mental wellbeing, menstruation, motherhood, and menopause—termed the “Four Ms.” The initiative aims to provide women with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate these different phases of life.

Historically, women have been underrepresented in scientific research. Before 1993, women were largely excluded from clinical studies, and even today, they account for less than 40% of study participants. To drive change, Therabody has launched an inaugural research grant program, awarding funding to scientists focused on conditions that disproportionately affect women. One such study, led by PhD candidate Bailey McLagan at the University of Southern California and now published in the Journal of Women’s Health, demonstrated that PowerDot, Therabody’s electrical stimulation device, reduced menstrual pain by 25%. Additional research at the University of Michigan is exploring how behavioral science and Theragun use impact physical activity and pain management in women over 65. Meanwhile, a study at Georgia State University is investigating how pneumatic compression from JetBoots can enhance recovery and performance in African American female runners.

“Science is the key driver of our women’s wellness education and will be used to identify and validate new product innovation opportunities,” said Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Senior Manager of Scientific Research at Therabody. “While we’re collaborating with reputable research teams to uncover new findings that will inspire product innovations, we have defined how our existing products help some of the most common concerns women have today: period pain, sleep, stress, and physical soreness.”

In addition to its research initiatives, “Therabody, for Her” aims to destigmatize conversations surrounding women’s health. The company is launching a video content series featuring discussions with thought leaders in women’s wellness, as well as an expanded library of educational content available on the Therabody website and app.

Therabody has also introduced Wellness Salons, which are live events designed to foster open dialogue among medical professionals, researchers, celebrities, and industry experts. These roundtable discussions will address key health concerns and offer practical solutions rooted in science and innovation.

“At Therabody, our mission has always been to help people live better, healthier lives,” said Amanda Henry, Vice President of New Business and Women’s Wellness. “With ‘Therabody, for Her,’ we’re tackling critical issues in women’s health that have been overlooked for far too long. It’s time to bring these conversations into the open and provide real solutions that empower women through every stage of life.”
