Mango-nificent news: A study finds that two cups a day of the antioxidant-rich fruits can improve insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control

Eating just two cups of mango a day can help lower insulin concentrations and improve insulin sensitivity in overweight or obese adults with chronic low-grade inflammation, according to new research.

The study, conducted at the Illinois Institute of Technology and published in Nutrients, brings a sweet and antioxidant-rich way for individuals to reduce their risk of chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, in under roughly 100 calories.

The study compared the consumption of fresh mangos to calorie-matched Italian ices in 48 adults aged 20-60, examining their effects on inflammation and insulin sensitivity in overweight and obese adults with low-grade chronic inflammation.

Those who ate mangoes saw a significant reduction in insulin resistance and improved blood sugar levels, and after four weeks, experienced significantly lower insulin concentrations compared to the beginning of the study. Those in the mango grouping also saw stable body composition, while the control group saw a “slight but significant increase in body weight,” researchers noted.

“Managing blood glucose isn’t just about monitoring blood sugar levels—it’s about improving insulin sensitivity,” noted Indika Edirisinghe, PhD, Professor of Food Science and Nutrition. “Our study suggests that adding fresh mangos to the diet can be a simple, enjoyable way for people who are overweight or have obesity to support better insulin function and reduce type 2 diabetes risk.”

Additional findings showed that inflammation markers and glucose levels weren’t significantly different between the two groups, deeming mangos a “heart-healthy swap for calorically comparable sweet treats.” No differences were noted in terms of fasting total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol or triglycerides, according to the study.

“The improvement in insulin sensitivity in the mango group, without changes in body weight, is noteworthy – which counters misconceptions about mangos’ natural sugar content and impact on obesity and diabetes,” Edirisinghe added.  “These findings support previous research showing that eating mango does not lead to weight gain, and while the exact mechanism is still unknown, the role of improved antioxidant status from mango consumption may be the mediating factor on blood glucose control.”

Consumers can now use their pre-tax funds on Shed’s supplement and nutrition products on Truemed’s platform

Shed is the latest health and wellness brand to partner with Truemed, a platform enabling consumers to direct their pre-tax Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for health-related purchases, such as Shed’s supplements and nutrition products.

Consumers can either use their HSA/FSA cards at Truemed’s checkout or use their personal credit card and submit for reimbursement. The platform also provides letters of medical necessity.

“At Shed, we believe that health and wellness should be accessible to everyone and our partnership with Truemed makes that vision a reality,” Shed CEO Morley Baker said. “Now, our customers can use their HSA/FSA funds to purchase our supplements and nutrition products, making it easier for them to prioritize their health while saving money. This is a game-changer for anyone looking to enhance their wellness journey.”

Shed recently launched Clear Protein Hydration, a refreshing alternative to thick protein shakes.

In an interview last month with Athletech News, Truemed co-founder and CEO Justin Mares shared that many consumers are still in the dark on how easy it is to use HSA/FSA funds.

“Part of this is because, prior to a platform like Truemed, the process was much more arduous for these specific types of purchases,” Mares said. “Consumers would have to schedule a doctor’s appointment, describe their health history and goals in detail, ask them to fill out a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), pay a fee, and then wait potentially for weeks for their claim to be approved. Our goal is that by integrating all of this directly into the payment flow – it’s as easy as clicking “Pay with HSA/FSA” at checkout – people will be able to empower themselves to use pre-tax savings for products that manage chronic diseases but that may not previously have been recognized by medical institutions as preventative medicine.”

Mares said that during his time at Truemed, the platform has empowered nearly 200,000 Americans to purchase “root-cause items” with HSA/FSA funds.

“We’re confident that this movement will only continue to grow as more people catch on and realize the potential of what they can access,” he added.

The platform has forged partnerships with several other brands, including Peloton, CorePower Yoga, Crunch Fitness, CrossFit, Momentous and Plunge.

Common Threads and Anahata Foundation have teamed up to support underserved communities in LA and NYC by emphasizing the power of nutrition

Common Threads, a national nonprofit focused on health and wellness through cooking and nutrition education, has forged a multi-year partnership with the Anahata Foundation to advance the “Food is Medicine” movement and support underserved communities in Los Angeles and New York City.

The collaboration comes amid an alarming backdrop where the prevalence of obesity among U.S. children and adolescents was 19.7% from 2017 to 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which also found that obesity prevalence increases as family income decreases.

A key focus of the partnership will be two initiatives: the Common Threads‘ Kitchen Clinic and Chef-Led Small Bites.

The Kitchen Clinic, designed for high school students, provides hands-on culinary education while promoting nutrition and wellness, helping students understand how food can prevent and manage chronic conditions.

Chef-Led Small Bites, aimed at elementary and middle schools as well as community spaces, brings professional chefs into the fold through interactive sessions that make learning about healthy eating engaging and fun.

“At Common Threads, we believe the kitchen is a classroom — a space where we learn to transform our health, fight disease, and thrive through the power of food,” Common Threads CEO and co-founder Linda Novick O’Keefe said. “Partnering with the Anahata Foundation allows us to deepen our impact in LA and NYC by addressing the root causes of chronic disease and health disparities. Together, we’re empowering young people to rewrite the narrative for their families and communities, one recipe at a time.”

Common Threads also offers a digital component, has partnered with more than 2,200 schools, and has provided over five million meals through its initiatives.

Above all, the two programs and this new partnership lay the foundation for promoting generational health—a core mission of Mark Bertolini, founder of the Anahata Foundation.

“Partnering with Common Threads aligns perfectly with the Anahata Foundation’s mission of holistic health and healing,” Bertolini said. “We’re thrilled to support programs that not only educate but also inspire, helping young people and their families see food as a gateway to wellness.”

Shed’s new product addresses two top demands of health-minded consumers: hydration & protein

Shed, a health and wellness brand centered on nutrition products, health coaching and weight loss medication, has a clear vision for the future of whey: Clear Protein Hydration.

An alternative to traditional protein shakes, which some find difficult to digest, Shed’s new Clear Protein Hydration line comes in three sugar-free flavors—Blue Razz, Peach Mango and Coconut Lime—offering hydration benefits along with 15 grams of protein per drink.

The product may also appeal to GLP-1 users looking to support appetite management and hydration.

Clear protein drinks have gained traction on TikTok, where young wellness consumers and influencers are swapping thick, creamy shakes for a lighter, more refreshing option.

According to a market research report from Grand View Research, the global clear whey protein market size is expected to expand at a compounded annual growth rate of 6.7% to 2030, fueled by health and fitness-minded consumers and the growing awareness of protein consumption.

Last year, several brands entered the clear game: Ascent Protein with Clear Whey Protein Isolate in two flavors: Pineapple Coconut and Orange Mango, each with 20 grams of protein, and as well as Gramms, a new clear whey isolate brand in fun flavors and single-serving packets for those on-the-go. 1Up Nutrition also sells clear protein isolate products in flavors such as Rocket Pop, Lemon Italian Ice (a best-seller), Peach Rings and more.

Bevel has added a new angle to nutrition tracking with blood glucose integration

Bevel has just launched AI-powered nutrition tracking, allowing its app users to integrate data directly from their blood glucose monitors. The new feature comes alongside fresh funding led by venture capital firm General Catalyst and South Park Commons.

The New York-based startup says the new capital will accelerate product development and expand the user base of its health companion app.

“Our investors recognize the growing demand for proactive health solutions that go beyond traditional care,” Bevel CEO and co-founder Grey Nguyen said. “Their support allows us to continue building tools that put individuals in control of their health decisions.”

Bevel’s latest nutrition tracking feature taps into a proprietary database of over five million verified food items to ensure accurate nutrient data. With blood glucose monitoring integration, users receive a personalized nutrition score for each meal, helping them discover how their food choices impact their levels. It also offers a more comprehensive view of how nutrition choices affect other health pillars, such as sleep. Bevel is capable of identifying patterns in eating habits and link them to other health metrics, providing tailored insights.

“Nutrition is a cornerstone of health, but it’s also one of the most complex to track accurately,” Nguyen said. “With this launch, we’re making it easier for people to understand how their food choices impact their health in real-time—and how they can make better ones.”

“As we expand Bevel’s capabilities, our goal remains the same: to help people connect the dots between their actions and their health outcomes,” said Ben Yang, Bevel co-founder and CTO.

Bevel integrates with several leading blood glucose monitors, such as Dexcom and Libre.  While such devices were once reserved mainly for medical purposes, blood glucose monitoring systems have become a next-gen wearable for wellness seekers and biohackers. Dexcom and Libre are among the brands that now offer monitors over-the-counter, which has increased access to those invested in their health.

While one may think glucose monitoring systems and traditional wearables are poised to compete, there’s been collaboration already between two major players. Smart ring maker Oura received a $75 million strategic investment late last year from Dexcom. The two have teamed to integrate Dexcom’s glucose data with vital signs, sleep, stress, heart health, and activity metrics from the Oura Ring.

Goldman Sachs led the round, which will fuel enhancements for Fay’s registered dietitians and clients

Digital nutritional therapy platform Fay—which connects consumers with insurance-covered Registered Dietitians (RDs)—has raised $50 million in a Series B led by Goldman Sachs, valuing the company at $500 million.

Existing investors General Catalyst and Forerunner also participated, bringing Fay’s total funding to $75 million. The investment will support growth initiatives and new offerings for dietitians and clients, the company said.

“Our AI-driven platform gives dietitians’ superpowers,’ automating burdens like insurance claims, scheduling, and patient follow-ups so they can focus on providing intimate and thoughtful care,” Fay co-founder and CEO Sammy Faycurry said. “By analyzing vast amounts of information, our platform helps dietitians craft more precise, personalized journeys for their clients, including supplement recommendations, hyper-curated shopping carts and lab analyses to drive prevention initiatives for employers and insurers.”

The new funding follows Fay’s $25 million raise last spring. Since its 2022 launch, the client-to-dietitian platform has added more than 2,300 RDs in its network and integrates with several insurance companies, including United Healthcare, Aetna CVS, Blue Cross, Anthem, Cigna, Optum, and Humana. It’s also landed several partnerships with major employers like Amazon, Microsoft and Pepsi, where their employees have access to Fay’s RDs.

Several specialties and modalities are available for clients, depending on their needs: eating disorders, diabetes, perimenopause and menopause, PCOS, pediatrics, sports nutrition, fertility, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, IB, gut health, oncology, weight loss, thyroid health and more, as well as functional health, intuitive eating and GLP-1 users.

Chase Williams, an investor at Goldman Sachs, underscored the importance of nutrition and its widespread impact on Americans.

“Nutrition is a fundamental component of healthcare, and yet it is often overlooked until it is too late, with people putting off behavior change until they get diagnosed with an avoidable chronic condition,” Williams said. “It doesn’t have to be that way, and a major part of U.S. healthcare moving towards value-based care is getting the system as a whole to work in a more proactive and preventative way.”

Better nutrition care will be at the center of the transition, he says.

“We believe Fay is uniquely positioned to support this shift with their AI-driven provider enablement platform for registered dietitians. We are thrilled to lead Fay’s Series B and support Sammy, Mark and the entire Fay team as they help registered dietitians build a thriving independent practice and enable patients to access high-quality, in-network nutrition care.”

Nutrition has become a focal point of the wellness industry, especially as studies continue to reveal the negative impacts of ultra-processed foods. Notably, Gen Z consumers demonstrate a willingness to spend an average of $7,856 per year (the largest of any generation) to achieve health, according to a recent survey by Forbes Health and Talker Research. The findings also indicated that the majority (68%) of respondents are willing to give up fast food, soda (65%) and ultra-processed foods (62%).

Athletech News spoke to several industry leaders to uncover the trends, innovations and shifts set to drive the wellness industry this year — and likely next

Longevity. Holistic wellness. Anti-aging. Metabolic health. Gut health. Femtech. Once niche buzzwords reserved for the wellness-savvy, these terms have entered mainstream conversations, sparking discussions among friends and peers.

As many focus on foundational steps to take control of their health, others are diving deeper—embracing cutting-edge technologies and tools that aim to enhance vitality and, hopefully, extend their lifespan.

It’s an exciting space, but it can be overwhelming—especially when trying to distinguish fleeting fads from lasting trends poised to shape the future of the wellness industry.

With a new year underway, Athletech News connected with leaders across various health sectors to explore the trends and technologies they believe will define the wellness landscape in 2025 and beyond.

AgelessRx Co-Founder Reflects on Potential of GLP-1 Microdosing and Rapamycin

Dr. Sajad Zalzala, chief medical officer and co-founder of AgelessRx, expects Geroprotective therapies (interventions tackling aging) to pick up speed in 2025, building on the momentum of research released in recent years.

His telehealth company, centered on longevity, has captured the interest of consumers averaging 50 years old and high-performers who need to squeeze the most out of every breath.

“I suspect we will see a wider and broader interest in Rapamycin as it gets studied for chronic fatigue syndrome, long COVID, female fertility, oral health, chronic pain and more,” Dr. Zalzala adds, referencing the FDA-approved drug.

a smiling image of Dr. Zalzala
Dr. Zalala

He also projects that NAD+ will continue to experience strong interest due to its versatile benefits across several health domains and its pop culture ties, catapulted in part by Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, NAD+ fans.

At the same time, Dr. Zalzala also expects GLP-1 medications to gain interest for its benefits beyond weight loss, appealing as a solution to those struggling with inflammation and addiction. He also predicts an emphasis on GLP-1 microdosing for cost effectiveness, longevity benefits and tolerance in the near future. Dr. Zalzala isn’t alone; functional medicine expert Dr. Frank Lipman also sees the potential of GLP-1 microdosing

In addition to a focus on mental wellness and cognitive health, the AgelessRx co-founder also projects an increase in personalized wellness tools.

“As people are becoming more interested in the inner workings of their bodies, we’re seeing more demand for micronutrient and microbiome testing as well as using wearables to guide therapies and outcomes,” Dr. Zalzala says.

23andMe’s Dr. Abul-Husn on the End of One-Size-Fits-All Solutions

23andMe’s vice president of genomic health, Dr. Noura Abul-Husn, shares Dr. Zalzala’s prediction on personalized wellness.

“Personalized wellness, driven by the unique intersection of genetic insights and blood/biological age data, will have a lasting impact into 2025 and beyond,” Dr. Abul-Husn says. “People are becoming more interested in tailoring their fitness and health routines to their unique genetic makeup, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for everyone.”

a smiling image of Dr. Abul-Husn
Dr. Abul-Husn

Similarly, Dr. Abul-Husn believes the emphasis on mental wellness also has staying power — with mindfulness, meditation, breathwork and stress management becoming an essential part of a comprehensive health stack.

“Focusing on mental health and implementing practices like meditation and mindfulness can alleviate stress and anxiety, factors that can contribute to neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” Dr. Abul-Husn says. “As we continue to understand even more about the connection between mental and physical health, these holistic approaches will only become more prevalent.”

This year, we are also likely to see generalized health recommendations like recommended daily allowances and general nutritional guidelines fade, predicts Dr. Abul-Husn.

“Advances in personalized wellness and nutrition are showing that factors like age, weight, daily activities and even genetics influence nutritional requirements,” she says. “Genomics and other technologies are helping provide a clearer picture of one’s specific health needs. This shift supports an approach where nutrition and health recommendations are tailored to each person’s lifestyle and genetic makeup or biology, offering more precise guidance that can improve health and longevity.”

NextSense’s Caitlin Shure Excited for Closed-loop Wearables, Rise of Femtech

NextSense head of product and content Caitlin Shure, PhD, is eyeing several trends for 2025, related to wearables, femtech and women’s health.

While sporting a wearable on the wrist has become commonplace, Dr. Shure points out that there is a desire for wearable devices to be discreet, comfortable and even stylish.

“Products like the Oura Ring have become popular due to their sleek design and comfort, and future wearables will likely emphasize these aspects to appeal to a broader audience,” Dr. Shure says. “Current wearable form factors, such as bulky EEG headbands, remain less socially acceptable, limiting mainstream adoption. With the next generation of wearables, companies are striving to integrate advanced technologies like EEG into more subtle, fashionable designs—making health tracking not only functional but also aesthetically appealing for everyday wear.”

a smiling headshot of Caitlin Shure, PhD.

She also hints at an exciting new development in the wearable tech space: closed-loop wearables that create feedback loops to make adjustments for optimal health, such as automatically adjusting settings for relaxation or signaling users when their stress levels are too high. Advancements like these are what position wearables as an active partner in health management rather than a simply passive tracker, she says.

Tech company NextSense is leading the way in the space, having created brain-responsive earbuds that support sleep and energy enhancement.

Notably, Dr. Shure points out the rising femtech industry — an exciting and important space that is focused on products addressing women’s health needs – is poised to grow rapidly in 2025 and beyond.

“With ongoing advancements in menstrual tracking, hormonal health, reproductive support and even menopause management, femtech is gaining traction as a valuable sector within wellness,” Dr. Shure says. “From apps to wearable devices tailored to women’s unique health needs, femtech innovations are becoming a crucial part of both preventative and personalized health. This continued focus on women’s health reflects a broader trend toward inclusive wellness and the development of tech that acknowledges different health needs across demographics.”

Dr. Davis Champions Heart Health, Metabolic Disease Solutions

Humann chief cardiologist Dr. Chris Davis, FACC, offers a compelling prediction for 2025 that is right in his wheelhouse: the endothelial glycocalyx.

For laypersons who are unfamiliar with this gel-like layer of glycoproteins, Dr. Davis assures that we will soon hear more about its role in maintaining healthy blood vessels and preventing heart disease.

“Many people don’t know that the glycocalyx is a layer that lines the inside of your arteries, shielding them from damage and helping keep blood cells, white blood cells and cholesterol molecules flowing smoothly through your arteries,” Dr. Davis says. “A healthy glycocalyx helps ensure that your arteries produce nitric oxide, a vital molecule for maintaining healthy blood flow and blood pressure.”

Humann, a heart health supplement company, welcomed the triple board certified physician to their team last summer.

Dr. Davis

Dr. Davis also points to the increased interest in cardiometabolic health, which has become a more common focus as more individuals discover the connection between cardiovascular health and properly functioning metabolic systems. This attention will likely lead to awareness of new remedies.

“For example, studies show the benefits of berberine as a tool to support blood sugar and blood pressure management, insulin resistance and cholesterol levels, and we may see a rise in the popularity for solutions like these to help mitigate metabolic disease,” Dr. Davis says.

Dr. Bulsiewicz Explores Gut-Immune Connection, Microbiom Nutrition

While Dr. Davis has the heart covered, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a gastroenterologist and founder of gut health supplement company 38Tera, noted the growing awareness of gut-immune connection.

“2025 will be the year people prioritize their gut health not just for digestion, but for whole-body immunity,” he says. “The gut and the immune system are inseparable, and the best way for us to reduce inflammation is by healing the gut. You will hear more about this in the coming year.”

Dr. Bulsiewicz

The New York Times bestselling author of “Fiber Fueled” also points out that there’s a new generation of gut health supplements in the pipeline for this year.

“I’m excited to play a central role in making this happen,” Dr. Bulsiewicz says, adding that he launched 38Tera last year. “Our flagship product – DMN, or Daily Microbiome Nutrition – is a powerful overhaul of Grandma’s orange drink using cutting edge science and premium ingredients. It helps you feed your microbes daily in a way that’s easy, delicious and effective. In 2025, 38Tera will expand its range with evidence-based solutions to common gut issues.”

Much like the other experts in their respective fields, he emphasizes the role of personalization when it comes to the future of the wellness industry.

“This year, personalized gut health solutions will dominate the wellness space, with microbiome testing and tailored nutrition plans becoming more accessible than ever,” he adds. “This is something I’m personally involved with as the U.S. medical director of ZOE.”

MyFitnessPal is putting fad diets on notice with a two-day installation in Austin, Texas this week

Take a hike, lettuce water. MyFitnessPal has launched an interactive two-day experience in Austin, Texas, this week, urging consumers to adopt sustainable habits over fad diets and ineffective “quick fixes.”

Dubbed FadLab, the installation is set up at The Austin Motel in downtown Austin and will be open January 29-30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The platform has been promoting FadLab on its social media pages, offering a behind-the-scenes look for those who can’t make it to Austin. Along with opportunities to take playful selfies with several props, FadLab gently pokes fun at extreme diet culture, such as the baby food diet.

Credit: MyFitnessPal/@holisiticlaurenkelly

“The New Year often brings a surge of interest in extreme diets and quick-fix weight loss solutions, but these approaches can be misleading and unsustainable,” said Melissa Jaeger, RD and head of nutrition for MyFitnessPal. “Through the FadLab, we bring to life the pitfalls of fad dieting, while empowering individuals to focus on sustainable, realistic progress. By tracking your food with MyFitnessPal, members can take small, manageable steps toward their goals. It’s about progress over perfection––a concept we’re sharing with all of our members this year.”

FadLab is one of several recent initiatives from the fitness and nutrition tracking app, building on its recognition of Quitter’s Day—the second Friday of January, when many abandon their New Year’s resolutions—to encourage a commitment to “quit quitting.”

The trick, MyFitnessPal says, is to celebrate small wins, which lay the foundation for long-term success. That means trusting the process and considering MyFitnessPal’s recent survey findings, which found that 81% of respondents attribute their failure to meet goals to overly restrictive diets. Instead, MyFitnessPal emphasizes that finding balance is key and that tracking can make a significant difference.

“An all-or-nothing approach oftentimes sets you up for failure, and that’s mostly because it doesn’t take real life into account– there are going to be times when you opt for the side of fries instead of the side salad, and that’s okay,” MyFitnessPal scientific advisory council member Dr. Mike Varshavski said earlier this month. “Instead of self-criticizing, or worse – giving up entirely – just track it, adjust and keep moving forward. It’s not about one meal – it’s about finding balance over the day, week, or month – and just making progress.”

MyFitnessPal CEO Mike Fisher underscored the message, emphasizing the need for a mindset shift away from fad diets in favor of sustainable progress.

“MyFitnessPal empowers users to take meaningful steps toward their goals by helping them understand their food choices,” Fisher said. “Tools like our barcode scanner, meal scan and voice log make this process intuitive and accessible, reinforcing our commitment to helping people achieve real results—one step at a time.”

Los Angeles Sparks player Cameron Brink shines in Optimum Nutrition’s latest campaign

Optimum Nutrition, a sports nutrition brand, has launched Pretty Damn Good, a new campaign celebrating women athletes. The initiative kicks off with a video featuring WNBA player Cameron Brink.

The video, narrated by Brink’s mother, Michelle Bain-Brink—a former college basketball player—chronicles Cameron’s journey to the WNBA. Set to home videos from her youth, Michelle delivers a powerful message, challenging the notion of her daughter’s achievements being labeled as “pretty good,” asserting instead that they should be recognized as “Pretty Damn Good.”

“Hearing my mom’s voice narrate my journey is incredibly personal,” Brink said. “It reminds me to take pride in what I’ve accomplished. I want to help others do the same because women should receive the recognition they deserve. Being ‘Pretty Damn Good’ isn’t just about talent. It’s about owning your progress and celebrating it.”

Ten other star athletes and celebrities will join Brink as part of the campaign on social media, including soccer champion Ali Krieger, gold medal gymnast Laurie Hernandez and actress and musician Ryan Destiny.

“Women athletes work extraordinarily hard to reach their goals, yet their achievements and milestones are too often overlooked or dismissed as ‘pretty good,'” Optimum Nutrition general manager Christiane Brocky said. “We are proud to celebrate and support women in sport and fitness by spotlighting female athleticism and providing nutrition products that help elevate performance.”

Continuing with its initiative, the sports nutrition brand is donating $25,000 to the nonprofit VoiceInSport Foundation, which advocates for women in sports.

“At VoiceInSport, we put the voice of women of all ages in sport at the center of everything we do,” said founder and CEO Stef Strack. “Optimum Nutrition supports us in this mission, helping us continue to break barriers and champion women athletes. When we break down walls and inspire women athletes to stay in sport, we help create the next generation of strong women in sports and beyond.”

Blockbuster drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are decimating baked goods and reducing household grocery spending, yet they present ample opportunities for certain food categories and nutrition-focused brands to nab new consumers

There’s an appetite for change in the air, according to one new study from the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. As the waistlines of Americans continue to shrink due to the adoption of obesity-busting medications (commonly known as GLP-1s), their household spending is also slimming down—and now we know just how much.

Households with at least one GLP-1 user under their roof are seeing a reduction in grocery spending by approximately 6% within six months of beginning the appetite-reducing medications, according to the study, appropriately titled “The No-Hunger Games: How GLP-1 Medication Adoption is Changing Consumer Food Purchases.”

The findings are based on household panel and proprietary survey data from Numerator, which linked survey responses on GLP-1 adoption with food purchases made between July 2022 and October 2024, creating a representative panel of U.S. households.

While it’s not entirely surprising that appetite-reducing medications (and their sudden widespread availability via telehealth platforms and easily accessible compounded versions) would reduce food spending, the study’s authors found three notable findings:

Those who are using GLP-1 medications for weight loss rather than diabetes management tend to be younger and wealthier. Additionally, high-income households experienced an even larger spending reduction (an average of 8.6%). GLP-1 use also has an affect on restaurants and take-out establishments, particularly in breakfast spending, which declined by nearly 4%, and dinner spending, which dropped by 6%, according to the study.

In terms of the food industry, GLP-1 users are ditching ultra-processed foods, with sweet bakery items—described by the authors as a category potentially associated with impulse purchases—emerging as the biggest casualty. Instead, weight loss medication users are reaching for nutrient-dense options, such as yogurt and fresh produce.

As the authors point out, the documented shifts in food purchases offer the food industry several actionable opportunities.

“Firms may need to adapt their product offerings, packaging sizes, and marketing strategies to align with changing consumption patterns,” the authors wrote. “By proactively addressing these evolving preferences, businesses can better position themselves in a market shaped by the growing adoption of GLP-1 medications.”

There are already glaring signs of an evolving landscape: grocers expanding their natural health sections with minimally-processed sauces and pasta made of lentils, while Target doubles down on stocking its shelves with “better-for-you” food products, supplements and other wellness-adjacent items

And while the ice cream aisle is still vast, freezers with single-ingredient frozen options are growing, appealing to those who want a frozen treat. Campoverde sells packs of fruit-on-a-stick, including cantaloupe, mango, and frozen pineapple spears, while Fresh Farms offers bags of Frozen Cotton Candy Grapes—which, despite their name, contain no added sugar or ingredients.

an image of frozen cotton candy grpaes

Yogurt has also been “treat-ified,” with brands like Clio offering mini frozen Greek yogurt bars that are high in protein and probiotics—some of which are zero sugar.

Hims & Hers, a health and wellness platform that offers GLP-1 medications, is also getting in on the action with the launch of protein-packed nutrition products like shakes and snack bars designed with GLP-1 users in mind. Similarly, Daily Harvest has added a GLP-1 Support bundle to its meal delivery menu while food giant Nestlé unveiled Vital Pursuits, a line of frozen meals suitable for weight loss medication users.

Although take-out establishments may have seen a decrease in spending, one smoothie franchise is ahead of the curve: Smoothie King, which has introduced a special menu for GLP-1 users.

While the authors acknowledge uncertainty about the long-term shifts in consumer spending and behavior—particularly noting some ‘reversion’ after six months of GLP-1 use—it seems likely that weight loss medications will become even more widespread, significantly impacting the food industry. Further driving the trend are gyms, boutique fitness brands like F45, and even fitness equipment companies like Echelon, which have begun incorporating weight loss medication components.

Backed by Beckham as co-founder, IM8 is taking strides to position itself as a science-first supplement company rather than a celebrity brand

IM8, a new health and wellness supplement company co-founded by David Beckham, won’t be counting on its affiliation with the former soccer star to sell pills and powders – at least, that’s not the only marketing tactic the brand will use.

Co-founded by Beckham and Danny Yeung, the CEO of health science company Prenetics, IM8 officially launched in November. The company sells two products: Daily Ultimate Essentials, a supplement powder that acts as a multivitamin, probiotic and more all wrapped into one, and Daily Ultimate Longevity, an anti-aging pill.

As it looks to take over the crowded supplement space, IM8 is leaning into science-backed wellness, seeking to position itself as the most effective – and safe – supplement product on the market.

At a launch event held Tuesday in New York City, Beckham and other IM8 stakeholders touted the fact that IM8 has been Certified for Sport by NSF, a not-for-profit organization that tests supplements for harmful substances. They also pointed to the brand’s scientific advisory board, a group of six doctors, researchers and scientists who’ve informed IM8 on product design.

“This wouldn’t work if it was a celebrity brand, because people see through that,” Beckham said during the event. “It’s all about the product.”

The Only Daily Supplement You’ll Need?

IM8’s flagship product, Daily Ultimate Essentials, is priced at $79 for a monthly subscription and $99 for a one-time purchase of 30 servings. The product contains vitamins and minerals, probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics, along with ingredients designed to support an array of positive health outcomes like energy, cognitive function, gut health and hydration.

According to IM8, Daily Ultimate Essentials replaces the need for 16 daily supplements and provides 92 ingredients in total.

Speaking during the launch event, IM8 scientific advisory board members touted the brand’s use of clinical research, quality ingredients and cutting-edge science as reasons consumers should believe IM8’s pitch that it offers a safe, effective daily supplement.

“It feels so good knowing that we’re creating this supplement that’s safe, a supplement that we know doesn’t have heavy metals, microplastics (and) aflatoxins,” said Dr. Dawn Mussallem,  an integrative oncologist at Mayo Clinic and a member of IM8’s advisory board. “That’s something no one talks about: the safety, the purity, the consistency and the dosing.”

IM8’s biggest competitor figures to be AG1, a popular supplement brand that also sells a daily all-in-one powder

Compared to AG1, IM8 skews more science-heavy in its marketing approach. IM8’s website features numerous testimonials from doctors, scientists and nutritionists, along with a healthy dose of Beckham. The former Manchester United star features prominently in the brand’s social media feed and is all over IM8’s website, starring in videos where he states his belief in the brand and one where he shares a recipe for a healthy smoothie containing IM8.

Beckham’s Supplement Pitch

On Tuesday, Beckham said part of the reason he wanted to create IM8 was to give people an all-in-one option for supplementation, citing his own struggles with having to take too many products for optimal health.

“I’ve been taking supplements for many years, and I walk into the store and I’m confused,” he said. “I don’t know what to buy; there are so many products out there..”

IM8’s all-in-one formula is designed to eliminate that problem for consumers by combining a multivitamin, probiotic, hydration supplement and more into one product. It’s also designed to eliminate the other major complaint people tend to have with supplements: do they actually work?

“I want to bring something into this world where I had that instant feeling – and I’m not saying the next morning I’m going to feel great – but I want to feel a difference, and I want to feel a difference in a week, or I want to feel different in a month,” Beckham said.

Beckham is confident IM8 will hit that mark for consumers around the world, citing his own experience so far taking the supplement.

“I’ve been taking it for the last six months …. and I know what my improvements have been,” he said. “I physically feel it. My focus is better; my energy is better; I feel fresher; I’m sleeping better; my gut is great, all of those things.”

The popular retailer has once again put a bullseye on health and wellness, celeb brands, functional beverages and more

Shopping at Target at the start of a new year can feel like a renewing experience. As holiday decorations dwindle in a clearance aisle, displays overflow with items that encourage a fresh start—whether it’s stocking up on supplements, embracing Dry January with a six-pack of non-alcoholic beer, upgrading personal care routines with the latest wellness tech or picking up a few new pieces of activewear for the gym or Pilates.

Target made it possible last year as it went all-in on wellness — and in 2025, it’s doubling down.

The beloved retailer is introducing more than 2,000 nutrition, personal care, and better-for-you food and functional beverage options in 2025. Half of the new wellness products—more than 600 of them exclusive to Target—are priced under $10.

“We understand that wellness is deeply personal, and it spans many different aspects of people’s lives, so at Target our approach to wellness reaches into every category of our assortment,” Target executive vice president and chief commercial officer Rick Gomez said.

Here’s a rundown of some of Target’s exclusive products and brands that consumers can expect to find. Interestingly, one category seems to be missing from Target’s expanded lineup: fitness. However, the retailer notes that it’s introducing three wellness ‘discovery kits,’ one of which is fitness-themed.

That aside, Target’s list certainly highlights the growing number of celebrities that have launched their own brands as the health and wellness space booms:

  • Poppi prebiotic cream soda, a gut-friendly beverage
  • BERO, actor Tom Holland’s new premium non-alcoholic beer brand
  • A new haircare line from Ashley Tisdale’s Being Frensche and products from Blake Brown, a haircare brand founded by Blake Lively
Kourtney Kardashian for Lemme, a wellness brand in Target.

  • Activewear from Cassey Ho’s Blogilates and expanded offerings from Target’s All in Motion brand

Good & Gather, Target’s food and beverage brand, is also growing to add more than 250 new wellness-focused products as consumers are increasingly opting for healthier options.

The better-for-you and keto-friendly food brand has unveiled a high-protein and low-sugar granola in four fun flavors

Magic Spoon, a newer better-for-you cereal brand that is high-protein and grain-free, is giving granola a makeover with its newly introduced Magic Spoon Protein Granola.

While granola may be a tasty breakfast option, it has long been known for its high sugar content – until now. Magic Spoon has integrated nuts and seeds into its gluten and soy-free Protein Granola and contains just 2 grams of sugar and 7-8 grams of protein.

“Our Protein Granola is everything you love about granola without the compromise,” Magic Spoon co-founder Gabi Lewis said. “Building on the excitement our fans have for our cereal, we’re thrilled to introduce a delicious new way to fuel up in the morning or on the go. This product is designed for those seeking a satisfying option that aligns with their health and wellness goals, delivering the perfect balance of taste and nutrition.”

The new cereal is available in four flavors: Honey Almond, Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate Almond and Mixed Berry and can be found at its website, Amazon.com and in Walmart and Target stores.

Launched in 2019, Magic Spoon has grown from a direct-to-consumer startup to its products being on the shelves of over 20,000 stores – and is commonly found in the healthier aisles of grocery stores.

Food giants have scooped up brands that are health-focused in recent months, especially as consumers are more keen to reach for foods that are lower in sugar and higher in protein. Could Magic Spoon be next? it’s possible, consider recent deals. PepsiCo acquired family-founded Siete last fall for $1.2 billion around the same time as Keurig Dr Pepper secured functional energy and supplement brand Ghost in $1 billion-plus deal. Superfood brand Bloom, launched by fitness and wellness influencer Mari Llewellyn, also landed an investment in 2024 from Nutrabolt, handing the C45 maker a 20% stake in the popular brand.

For fitness professionals, understanding how best to support clients with diabetes can go a long way

Understanding the unique needs of clients managing Type 2 Diabetes or pre-diabetes is essential for fostering an effective and empowering environment. Chronic conditions like diabetes bring unique challenges, and fitness professionals help support these clients on their health journeys. Drawing from L-Nutra Health’s Diabetes Etiquette Guide, Renee Fitton, MS, RD, Director of Education at L-Nutra, offered actionable insights for such fitness professional-client relationships.

Encouragement Over Criticism

For clients with diabetes, setbacks can sometimes feel magnified. Holidays, busy schedules, or even unexpected life events may disrupt routines. A positive approach can make all the difference.

“Instead of focusing on what went wrong, highlight what lies ahead,” Fitton told Athletech News. “Encourage clients to celebrate life’s moments while maintaining consistency in their routines. When setbacks happen, help them reset with achievable goals like adding a serving of non-starchy vegetables to their meals or committing to 30 minutes of activity per week. These small, manageable changes build confidence and momentum.”

Education and Collaboration

A foundational understanding of diabetes is critical for any fitness professional working with these clients. This includes learning the basics of how insulin functions, the impact of foods on blood sugar, and the importance of physical activity in diabetes management.

“Understanding the disease at a basic level allows fitness professionals to better relate to their clients and offer tailored guidance,” Fitton noted. “However, it’s equally important to know when to step back. Diabetes is a complex medical condition, and some decisions—especially around nutrition and treatment—should always be made with input from a healthcare professional.”

Fitton encouraged fitness professionals to build networks of registered dietitians and healthcare providers. “When you partner with trusted specialists, you ensure your clients receive the comprehensive care they need,” She said. “Referring clients to the right professionals demonstrates integrity and prioritizes their health, which ultimately strengthens their trust in you.”

Flexibility and Patience

Managing diabetes is not a linear process. Clients may experience fluctuations in energy, motivation, and health status, impacting their ability to stay consistent.

“Patience and adaptability are essential,” Fitton explained. “Your clients’ needs may vary week to week or even day to day. Adjust your approach to meet them where they are in their journey—whether that means modifying a workout or celebrating incremental progress, like sticking to a routine for a few weeks.”

This flexibility helps clients stay on track and reinforces a sense of trust and partnership between them and their fitness professionals.

Respecting Privacy

Respecting a client’s boundaries is crucial when discussing a sensitive health condition like diabetes. Fitton emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.

“Clients may or may not feel comfortable sharing details about their condition or treatment plan,” said Fitton. “Always allow them to lead the conversation and avoid asking intrusive questions. Creating a safe, nonjudgmental space lets clients decide what they want to share.”

Promoting a Holistic Approach

While food and blood sugar management is central to diabetes care, focusing solely on these areas can be overwhelming for clients. Focusing on the broader benefits of a healthy lifestyle can be beneficial.

“Exercise is a powerful tool for managing diabetes—not just physically, but mentally as well,” Fitton shared. “Help clients see the bigger picture by incorporating movement into their daily lives and promoting overall well-being. A balanced approach that includes mindfulness, stress management, and physical activity can make diabetes management feel less daunting.”

Empowering Clients for Long-Term Success

The role of a fitness professional goes beyond guiding workouts to building trust, fostering confidence, and supporting clients. The L-Nutra Health’s Diabetes Etiquette Guide can help fitness professionals better understand how to navigate sensitive conversations and provide guidance.

“Empathy, education, and collaboration are the cornerstones of effective support,” said Fitton. “By prioritizing these principles, fitness professionals can help their clients feel empowered to take control of their health and celebrate even the smallest victories.”

New data from the popular app reveals that nutrition and food tracking is an effective tool for meeting weight management goals

MyFitnessPal, an OG in the food-tracking app space, has released preliminary data revealing that nearly 50% of its app subscribers who use the app daily achieved their weight loss goal (5%) within 16 weeks, with premium users logging a higher success rate (49.3%) than non-premium users (46.9%).

“Those who actively logged food in MyFitnessPal and engaged more frequently with the app were statistically more likely to reach their weight loss goal within four months,” said Dr. Zhaoping Li, professor of medicine and chief of the division of clinical nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles. “This finding underscores the role of consistent food tracking as a cornerstone of progress towards weight loss goals.”

As MyFitnessPal points out, committing in the early stages appears to pay off. According to the nutrition app’s internal data, MyFitnessPal found that those who logged their food at least four days within their first week were seven times more likely to make measurable progress toward their weight loss goals.

“Whether you’re just starting out or navigating a medically-supported program, MyFitnessPal offers the tools and insights to support you every step of the way,” MyFitnessPal CEO Mike Fisher said. “While weight loss can seem daunting, just logging one meal can be the start of success.”

Fisher was appointed CEO of the popular nutrition-tracking app last year.

The platform has also been shown to be effective in medical weight management programs, such as Australia’s Medmate, a telehealth company that integrates GLP-1 medication with a premium MyFitnessPal subscription. Those who tracked their food intake with the app were 32% more likely to stick to their GLP-1 treatment than those who did not track foods, and by the eighth week, 37% who tracked their meals remained engaged in the weight management program.

“These results underscore the importance of food tracking in enhancing adherence to complex medical treatments and fostering long-term behavior change,” Medmate CEO and medical director Dr. Ganesh Naidoo said.

MyFitnessPal recently released a new voice-to-text feature for premium members this month, making tracking nutrition intake even easier. The latest offering follows MyFitnessPal’s other tools, such as barcode and image-based meal scanning.

“At MyFitnessPal, we’re always looking for new ways to make nutrition tracking easier and less time-consuming for our members,” MyFitnessPal chief product officer Tim Holley said. “Voice Log is a big step forward in simplifying the experience. By making logging more intuitive, we’re helping our members stay focused on reaching their goals.”

The gut’s impact goes far beyond digestion, influencing everything from muscle recovery to stamina to mental clarity
Signe Svanfeldt is the Lead Nutritionist at Lifesum, a highly popular healthy eating platform

When most people think of fitness and well-being, they often focus on their physical strength, cardiovascular endurance or mental resilience. However, gut health is a critical component of health that’s often overlooked.

For athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and even those simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, gut health is the foundation upon which much of our overall well-being and physical performance is built.

The gut’s impact on fitness goes far beyond digestion – it influences energy levels, immune function, mental clarity and recovery, all of which are crucial to excelling in any fitness regime.

It’s not just athletes or fitness buffs who should be concerned about gut health. The wider population, including those in the workforce, must also prioritize digestive wellness.

An estimated 70 million Americans suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which cost the United States economy nearly $140 billion annually. These staggering figures point to the widespread impact of gut-related issues on health and productivity. Gut health is therefore not only a cornerstone of physical fitness but also of employee well-being and overall productivity.

The Foundation of Fitness

The gut plays a central role in how the body processes nutrients, manages inflammation and regulates energy levels. These functions are key to fitness, as they impact everything from muscle recovery to stamina. Here’s how gut health influences various aspects of fitness:

1. Energy & Endurance

The gut is responsible for breaking down the food we eat into the nutrients our body needs for energy. If gut health is compromised, nutrient absorption is impaired, which can lead to low energy levels and fatigue – two major roadblocks to consistent training and athletic performance. Athletes rely on efficient digestion to convert carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into energy during intense workouts. A poorly functioning gut disrupts this process, leaving the body without the fuel it needs to perform optimally.

Furthermore, the gut’s ability to maintain blood sugar levels can directly impact endurance. Balanced gut health helps regulate glucose levels, preventing sudden energy crashes during long training sessions or competitions.

2. Recovery & Muscle Repair

Recovery is a crucial part of any fitness routine, and the gut plays a vital role here as well. A healthy gut supports the body’s ability to manage inflammation and repair tissues after exercise. Inflammation is a natural response to intense physical activity, but if left unchecked, chronic inflammation can lead to injury or prolonged recovery times. The gut, with its diverse microbiome, produces anti-inflammatory compounds that help control this process, ensuring faster recovery and reducing the risk of injury.

Additionally, the gut helps synthesize essential amino acids that are used in muscle repair. Without proper gut health, this synthesis can be compromised, slowing down the body’s ability to rebuild muscle tissue and limiting gains in strength and performance.

3. Mental Clarity & Focus

Gut health doesn’t only impact the body – it plays a significant role in cognitive function. The gut-brain connection, often referred to as the “gut-brain axis,” reveals how the health of the gut can influence mood, concentration and decision-making. For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, mental clarity and focus are just as important as physical strength. Whether you’re aiming for personal records in the gym or competing at a high level, staying focused during training is essential for peak performance.

A healthy gut promotes the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are critical for mood regulation and mental sharpness. In contrast, an imbalanced gut can lead to brain fog, lack of focus and even anxiety – factors that can detract from fitness goals and overall well-being.

4. Immune Function

A robust immune system is essential for maintaining a consistent fitness routine. The gut is home to 70% of the body’s immune cells, making it a critical line of defense against illness. A balanced gut microbiome helps fend off harmful pathogens and promotes immune resilience. For athletes, this means fewer sick days, more time spent training and less disruption to their fitness progress.

Gut health also influences inflammation, and while short-term inflammation helps the body recover from workouts, chronic inflammation can impair immune function, leading to frequent illness or injury. By nurturing gut health, athletes can boost their immune defenses and support long-term fitness goals.

Gut Health in the Workplace: Why Employers Should Care

Gut health is not only essential for those pursuing athletic performance but also for employees across industries. Poor gut health can severely impact workplace productivity, absenteeism, and overall employee well-being. Just as it affects energy, focus, and immune function in athletes, it impacts professionals who need to perform at their best mentally and physically in their jobs. Given that digestive disorders cost the U.S. economy $140 billion annually, employers have a strong incentive to support the gut health of their workforce.

A healthy gut is linked to better mental clarity, stress management, and overall mood—all of which are crucial for maintaining a productive work environment. Chronic stress, which is prevalent in high-demand work environments, directly impacts gut function, leading to issues like IBS and other GI disorders. By addressing gut health in the workplace, employers can reduce sick days, improve job satisfaction, and enhance productivity.

Here are a few key strategies employers can use to support their employees’ digestive health:

1. Promote Stress Management Practices

Chronic stress disrupts the digestive system, contributing to gut-related issues like bloating, constipation, and IBS. Employers can invest in mindfulness programs, offer yoga or meditation classes, and create stress-free spaces where employees can unwind. By helping employees manage stress, employers can not only improve gut health but also boost mental clarity and productivity.

2. Provide Gut-Friendly Snacks & Meals

Incorporating gut-friendly foods into the workplace can significantly enhance digestive health. Stocking breakrooms with fiber-rich snacks, prebiotic foods like bananas and oats, and probiotic options like yogurt and kefir can promote better gut health. Offering employees healthier choices will not only boost their energy levels but also improve their overall well-being, both in and out of the office.

3. Offer Access to Digestive Wellness Apps

Employers can provide access to wellness apps (like Lifesum), which offer personalized nutrition plans tailored to gut health. These apps help employees towards digestive wellness, such as tracking fiber and water intake. By supporting healthier dietary habits, employers can enhance both employee well-being and workplace performance.

4. Educate Employees on Gut Health

Finally, educating employees on the importance of gut health can foster a culture of wellness in the workplace. Offering workshops or wellness seminars on how gut health impacts mood, productivity and overall well-being can empower employees to take charge of their digestive health. These initiatives can reduce absenteeism and improve overall workplace morale.

Gut Health Is a Game-Changer

Incorporating gut-friendly practices into everyday life, whether through diet, stress management, or wellness programs, offers long-lasting benefits. The gut is more than just a digestive organ—it’s the foundation of a balanced, healthy life. Whether you’re an athlete aiming for peak performance or an employee striving for productivity, gut health is the key to unlocking your full potential.

Research highlights the urgent need for improved nutrition during pregnancy and postpartum, offering fitness professionals ways to support clients

A recent study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, highlights concerning trends in the dietary habits of pregnant and postpartum individuals. The research, which assessed participants from early pregnancy to one year postpartum, underscores the urgent need for improved nutritional guidance and support during these critical life stages.

The study used the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index (HEI) to evaluate diet quality on a 0-100 scale, with an average participant score of 61.6 — equivalent to a barely passing “D” on a traditional grading scale. While slightly better than the national average for U.S. adults, this score reveals significant room for improvement.

Program Design Considerations

For fitness and wellness professionals working with women during pregnancy and postpartum, this research offers critical insights into the unique challenges faced by this population. Proper nutrition during these stages is essential not only for the individual’s health but also for long-term outcomes for the child.

Anna Maria Siega-Riz, senior author and dean of the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, noted the disparities in diet quality linked to factors such as income, education, and access to resources. “Lower-income women may lack access to high-quality foods or the support needed to make lasting dietary changes,” she explained.

This means that nutritional education and behavior change strategies should consider a client’s socioeconomic context. Recognizing these barriers and collaborating with other professionals, such as dietitians, can lead to more effective support systems.

Key Findings

  • Stable diet quality, but room for growth: The study found little change in dietary patterns from pregnancy to postpartum, with the lowest scores in whole grains, fatty acids, and dairy consumption. Professionals might consider recommending simple, cost-effective meal plans or grocery lists to improve these areas.
  • Impact of sociodemographics: Higher diet quality was observed among higher-income, more educated participants. Fitness professionals should prioritize inclusivity by tailoring advice to align with diverse financial and cultural contexts.
  • Behavioral trends: Some participants reverted to pre-pregnancy habits, such as increased caffeine, alcohol, and refined carbohydrate consumption. Coaching postpartum clients on sustainable habits that accommodate these shifts can improve long-term adherence to healthier choices.
  • Nutritional moderation challenges: Sodium and saturated fats were notable areas where participants scored poorly. Incorporating tips for reading nutrition labels or meal prepping can help clients make better choices.

Opportunities for Collaboration

The research also highlights gaps in the current healthcare and support models for pregnant and postpartum women. Fitness professionals can play an important role by partnering with healthcare providers to create holistic wellness plans that address both physical activity and dietary needs.

Siega-Riz emphasized the importance of comprehensive care: “Policymakers and prenatal care providers need to understand that even pregnant women need support and guidance to change their dietary habits for the better.” This points to an opportunity for fitness pros to advocate for integrated care that includes nutrition and exercise counseling.

A related study in The Journal of Nutrition found links between diet and the gastrointestinal microbiome during pregnancy. While the implications of these findings are still being explored, they reinforce the importance of a balanced diet for both the parent and child. Fitness professionals could benefit from staying informed on emerging research in this area, as it may influence future recommendations for prenatal and postpartum clients.

This study serves as a reminder that nutrition is a cornerstone of health during pregnancy and postpartum. For fitness professionals, the findings present an opportunity to address gaps in education and support through personalized guidance, collaboration and a commitment to inclusivity.

Eggs shake off decades-old misconceptions to claim their place as a nutritional powerhouse

Do clients ask you if it’s okay to eat eggs? In a long-awaited announcement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared eggs officially “healthy” under its updated definition, a milestone celebrated by health enthusiasts, fitness professionals and nutrition advocates. The update cements eggs as a versatile and nutrient-rich option that supports a variety of healthy eating patterns.

The FDA’s revised criteria for the “healthy” label focus on foods that help Americans meet their nutritional needs, emphasizing dietary patterns that promote overall well-being. This announcement clears up decades of controversy surrounding eggs, particularly their role in cholesterol levels, and recognizes their numerous health benefits.

“This news makes eggs a clear healthy choice, vindicating them from outdated science,” said Dr. Jen Houchins, director of nutrition research for the American Egg Board’s Egg Nutrition Center. “Eggs offer high-quality protein and contribute essential nutrients, including vitamin D and choline, which many Americans are lacking in their diets.”

From Misunderstood to Celebrated

For years, eggs were a symbol of dietary caution, primarily due to concerns over cholesterol. In 1984, a TIME magazine cover famously questioned their health implications, fueling misconceptions that lingered for decades. However, modern research shows that the cholesterol in eggs does not adversely affect blood cholesterol levels as previously thought. Leading health organizations, including the American Heart Association, now embrace eggs as part of a heart-healthy diet for most individuals.

“This important update from the FDA reflects decades of research and unequivocally affirms the value of eggs for healthy living,” said Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board. “Eggs are a staple in nearly every American household, offering unmatched nutritional benefits for individuals of all ages.”

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend eggs as an ideal first food for infants and a key part of the diet for pregnant and lactating women, in part due to their choline content. Recent studies have further underscored eggs’ health benefits. Research published in The Journal of Nutrition links egg consumption to a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s dementia, attributed to dietary choline. Additionally, eggs contain lutein, which supports eye health, and can enhance nutrient absorption from vegetables, making them a complementary component of balanced meals.

The FDA’s updated designation is expected to influence consumer habits and reinforce eggs’ reputation as a nutrient-packed food choice.
