WhichWeight brings Olympic-level strength training solution to endurance coaches and athletes

A Colorado-based startup is giving coaches a powerful new tool with its blend of Olympic-level coaching methods and AI-powered programming: WhichWeight.

Born out of Kinesis Integrated in Boulder, Colorado, a well-known training hub for elite athletes, WhichWeight gives coaches and athletes a smarter way to approach strength training.

The startup recently unveiled its new website and several new partnerships, arriving at a time when endurance training is gaining momentum and in-person events from brands like Hyrox and CrossFit are drawing serious fitness competitors.

“Endurance athletes have long struggled to maximize their performance due to one key missing piece…effective strength training,” WhichWeight co-founder and CEO Chris Lee said. “When I coach Olympians, how well they can move their bodies outside their sport is clearly the ultimate game changer. Our platform guarantees athletes seamlessly integrate the right training at the right time, with their overarching goal in mind…setting a PR!”

The AI-powered platform’s strength programs update in real-time based on athlete data and performance and gives coaches the ability to instantly assign individualized strength phases that align with the entire season. A coaching dashboard also tracks progress and flags potential injury risks.

So far, WhichWeight has been quickly endorsed and adopted by elite endurance coaches and teams. In the last year, the brand has named several partnerships, including ones with Katie Cope Running, Jessica Schnier, Blue Collar Endurance Training, MultiSport, BigMetz and Coach Kallup at Lions Den Fitness.

“Speed usually comes at the cost of precision. Not with us,” WhichWeight CTO Jacob Carlson said. “We’re giving them a scalable, Olympian-backed tool that enhances how they train endurance athletes in a fraction of the time.”

A new study from McMaster university says cycle syncing—a popular trend on social media—won’t help women make muscle gains

In the age of (dis)information, fitness and wellness advice is everywhere on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram—much of it misleading, entirely false or even dangerous. Now, new research has officially debunked one trend: cycle syncing, a concept pushed by fitness influencers that encourages women to time their workouts according to specific phases of their menstrual cycle to boost muscle growth.

At a time when more women are embracing strength training for its wide-ranging benefits, the concept might seem like the ultimate gym hack— but not so, according to a new study from McMaster University published this month in The Journal of Physiology.

The study involved 12 healthy young women with regular menstrual cycles, which were tracked using blood and urine tests to accurately determine their cycle phase. Participants also ingested a tracer molecule, a special substance that helps track and measure protein levels in the body. Each participant completed two exercise trials—one during the late follicular phase (when estrogen is high) and one during the mid-luteal phase (when progesterone is high). In each phase, they performed resistance training.

Ultimately, the research team found that the menstrual cycle phase had no effect on muscle protein production—muscles responded about the same in both phases.

“Our findings conflict with the popular notion that there is some kind of hormonal advantage to performing different exercises in each phase,” said Lauren Colenso-Semple, lead author of the study and a former graduate student in the Department of Kinesiology. “We saw no differences, regardless of cycle timing.”

As she noted on LinkedIn, the lack of difference should be considered welcome news for female fitness enthusiasts.

“Women can ditch the confusing and complex cycle syncing recommendations and ignore any fearmongering about oral contraceptives,” she wrote.

The study’s supervisor, Stuart Phillips, the Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health at McMaster, noted that the work shows that women who want to lift weights and recondition their muscles should feel free to do so in any phase of their cycle.

“It is important to tailor your training to how you feel,” he added.

The researchers highlighted the need for more studies focused on women’s health, specifically research that examines how natural hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle—as well as external hormones like birth control— influence muscle growth and strength over time, using a more rigorous approach than in previous studies.

Some proponents of cycle syncing, however, praise the approach not just for fitness but for other areas of life as well, from skincare routines to social engagements and even scheduling certain activities for times when they feel most energized.

There’s no doubt about it—hormones are complex and woefully understudied. With such gaps in research and women left in the dark, several apps have hit the market to help women navigate their cycles and their transition into menopause, such as Clue and Flo. Smart ring maker Oura and human performance wearable company Whoop are also making strides in the women’s health space.

As gyms seek to optimize space and performance, modular strength equipment is becoming the go-to solution for maximizing efficiency and functionality

Strength training has long been a dominant force in fitness, consistently ranking among the top 20 industry trends. In 2025, however, it’s gaining even more momentum. According to the ACSM Health & Fitness Journal’s worldwide survey, traditional strength training has climbed to #5 – up from #11 in 2024.

For gym and club operators, this resurgence presents both an opportunity and a challenge. The natural instinct? Pack the gym floor with more strength equipment – squat racks, cable machines, plate-loaded presses etc. But as facilities expand their offerings, they also face downsides such as overcrowded spaces, inefficient layouts and skyrocketing equipment costs.

This is where REP Fitness is rewriting the playbook.

Rather than defaulting to multiple – and bulky – standalone machines, REP is redefining gym design with multi-functional, space-saving strength equipment that maximizes versatility, efficiency, and performance. Their philosophy is clear: more machines don’t make a better gym – better-designed machines do.

“Our design ethos states it blatantly: bigger is not always better,” says Sam Pizer, REP’s VP of Product Development. “Focusing on multifunctionality helps our customers get the best return on investment while enhancing member experience. Gyms can offer more with less space, making it a practical solution for both users and operators.”

credit: REP Fitness | Hyperion™ Series

The Future of Gym Equipment: Smarter, More Efficient, and User-Centric

REP’s PR-5000 is the ultimate example of the brand’s mission. This modular power rack is designed for gyms looking to maximize versatility, customization, and long-term adaptability. Built with heavy-duty 11-gauge steel and featuring a fully adjustable design, this rack serves as the foundation for a dynamic and customizable strength training playground.

“The PR-5000 is engineered for strength. It’s robust enough to handle the demands of a commercial environment while remaining modular, allowing for future growth and expansion,” Pizer explains.

Gym owners can start with a simple base setup and expand over time, creating an ever-evolving training environment that optimizes both space and performance.

“You can start with a base rack and add Athena™ cable towers to introduce functional trainer capabilities within the same footprint,” explains Pizer. “As your space expands, you can add storage or other accessories to improve organization and functionality. It’s a long-term investment that grows with your gym.”

A great example of this in action is the global functional training franchise F45.

“F45 recognized that their existing equipment and programming weren’t keeping up with the rising demand for strength training,” says Caitlin Jones, REP’s Director of Sales. “By investing in a PR-5000 with a Dual-Sided Athena, they tapped into the strength training trend, re-engaged their members, and expanded their programming library with over 600 new movements.”

Another one of REP’s standout innovations is the Ares™ 2.0, a fully integrated cable system that enhances the traditional power rack by adding functional trainer capabilities – all within a single, space-efficient footprint. This design enables multiple users to train simultaneously without interference.

“Traditionally, a commercial gym requires standalone machines for every exercise, limiting the number of users per station,” explains Jones. “The Ares 2.0 solves this. The individual weight stacks allow two users to train at the same time for independent exercises, without interfering with someone squatting or bench pressing on the rack.”

For gym owners, this translates to a higher return on investment. More users per station means less time spent waiting for equipment, improved session flow, and fewer trainers to oversee workouts in a smaller space.

The Adonis™ is another example of REP’s commitment to creating space-conscious, high-performance equipment. Combining a lat pulldown and low row function within a single machine, Adonis delivers the same biomechanics and power as standalone versions without the massive footprint.

“It’s designed to offer a seamless, user-friendly experience that feels as natural and effective as using a standalone piece of equipment,” Pizer says. “You won’t feel a difference when using the Adonis for lat pulldowns or low row functions, or the Ares 2.0 for true isometric exercises.”

Another Game-Changer on the Horizon

As if REP’s current lineup wasn’t impressive enough, the company is preparing to introduce a revolutionary Smith Machine that will integrate seamlessly into its modular systems, proving once again that equipment doesn’t need to take up more space – it just needs to be smarter.

“This is absolutely a game-changer,” Pizer reveals. “It will elevate the modularity of our rack systems, allowing even more functionality within a compact footprint. You can expect this Smith Machine to be buttery smooth and outperform other standalone options, offering users maximum efficiency and comfort.”

Efficiency That Pays Off

Aside from space-saving benefits, REP Fitness solutions also help gyms reduce costs while improving functionality and user experience.

“REP’s design philosophy emphasizes durability and multi-functionality, which helps gyms save money on equipment purchases,” says Jones. “By investing in robust, multifunctional machines, gyms can reduce the need for multiple separate pieces of equipment.

The result?

  • Lower equipment costs
  • Fewer maintenance expenses
  • A more organized, efficient training space
  • A better member experience, translating to enhanced retention
  • Fewer trainers are needed because everything is in one place

As strength training continues to flex its muscle in the fitness industry, gym owners and operators have a decision to make: fill their facilities with more equipment, or invest in smarter, more efficient solutions.

REP Fitness is proving that you don’t need more machines – you just need better ones.

Torque Fitness has a new push sled capable of taking fitness consumers to new places, moving in newer directions

Torque Fitness, the functional and strength training equipment provider, has the fitness industry pushing forward in more ways than one. The Minnesota-based brand recently announced the launch of its TANK M3, a new rendition of its renowned all-surface resistance sled.

The M3 differs from its ancestors with added maneuverability and progress-measuring capabilities. All the while, it maintains a magnetic resistance foundation, which makes the equipment applicable to any gym floor, as opposed to the more common friction-based sleds which can damage facility surfaces.

“As functional fitness and resistance training continues to grow, the demand for versatile and efficient equipment has become more apparent,” said Jerry Dettinger, CEO of Torque Fitness. “The TANK M3 not only meets these needs but exceeds them, providing a solution that enhances the experience for both gym owners looking to optimize space and individuals aiming to maximize their workouts.”

You Can Go Your Own Way

Moving in a straight line is fun for only so long. So, after some encouragement from one of the NFL strength and conditioning coaches the brand works with and some extensive trial-and-error periods, Torque successfully installed a swivel system within the M3 to make lefts, rights and even full figure eights a possibility when pushing or pulling.

“With our focus on functional training, it was critical for us to design a TANK that could move in all the directions we move as humans,” said Dettinger. “We knew that maneuverability was a major pain point with previous models, especially in commercial spaces where users need equipment that’s flexible and easy to move.”

This upgrade makes the M3 impactful both in and outside of use. The equipment’s mobility makes gym floor rearrangement and eventual storage a significantly lower lift, both in a literal and figurative sense. This allows operators to further maximize their floors and fitness consumers to enjoy a more open gym or studio environment.

“Space is always top of mind for us, and the TANK M3 allows for incredible flexibility within the gym,” said Dettinger. “Operators can move it anywhere in the facility, making it adaptable to various spaces.”

The equipment’s ability to adjust weight levels with the flip of a lever rather than loading plates adds to its versatility and consequential efficiency as well.

“This means no downtime between sets and a smooth transition for the next user,” said Dettinger. “For operators, it allows quicker workouts and better space optimization, especially during peak hours. For users, it’s an immediate win — no fussing with weight plates, just a seamless adjustment that lets you focus on the workout itself. It’s all about getting more out of every minute, which is key in today’s fast-paced world.”

Simple and Smart

The M3’s straightforwardness shouldn’t be confused with unsophistication. The sled is as cutting edge as any piece of connected fitness equipment on the market, coming equipped with an integrated data readout screen that helps trainers track resistance levels, speed and progress.

“We understand that in today’s fitness world, tracking progress is key – whether you’re training for performance, health, or just personal improvement,” said Dettinger. “By including the screen, we’re helping users and trainers keep real-time records, making it easier to adjust workouts on the fly.”

“Our goal was to make the TANK M3 intuitive, easy to use, and effective, and the screen is a big part of that,” he added. “It’s a simple way to elevate the experience without complicating it.”

Resistance is the Way Forward

By making the sled that’s more adaptable, effective and smart, Torque is also opening up fitness consumers up to what it believes is a more elevated brand of exercise.

“We’ve always believed that there’s something inherently superior about running on the ground versus using a treadmill, and the same philosophy applies to functional resistance training,” Dettinger said. “Resistance training helps improve functional strength, joint health and metabolism, and it’s something that works for everyone, from beginners to elite athletes.”

It hasn’t taken Torque’s clients long to come to these realizations either. While the M3 remains in its early rollout stages, the brand already reports both operators and users have shared “extremely positive” feedback.

“We’ve heard from several gym owners who’ve shared how much it’s helped streamline operations and improve client satisfaction,” said Dettinger. “One thing that stands out is how quickly the TANK M3 has become a favorite in their facilities, with members incorporating it into their workouts seamlessly. We’re excited to see the product continue to perform well as it rolls out more broadly.”

The Tank M3 will be available to experience at The HFA Show next month in Las Vegas

Strength and conditioning equipment leader Torque Fitness has just dropped an innovative twist on the traditional push sled: The Tank M3, an eye-catching piece of equipment with all the bells and whistles in one compact design.

Power sleds may be a niche within the broader fitness equipment market, but it’s rapidly growing as fitness operators worldwide expand their strength training offerings to meet consumer demand. Unlike other fitness equipment, sleds provide a low-impact, full-body workout in a short amount of time.

The new Tank M3 tackles the common pain points of traditional commercial sleds, such as poor maneuverability and potential damage to flooring. In contrast, the compact Tank M3 touts a swivel system for smooth turns and lateral movements, adaptable magnetic resistance suitable for any surface (turf, rubber, concrete and more), and an integrated data screen that tracks resistance levels, speed and progress.

Functionality aside, when it comes to aesthetics, the Tank M3 lives up to its name—built to look like a powerhouse on the gym floor.

“The Tank M3 isn’t just a sled—it’s a complete performance tool that provides measurable results for athletes at any level,” Torque Fitness CEO Jerry Dettinger said. “With feedback from top strength coaches and facility operators, we’ve designed a sled that moves as powerfully as the athletes who push it. The 4th generation of our Tank lineup, the M3, is another example of Torque’s motto: Don’t Quit. Ever.”

Pre-orders have already begun, and the new equipment will be on display (and available to experience firsthand) at The HFA Show March 12-14 in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Torque Fitness booth #1519.

Flex, a Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) payment solution, has teamed up with amp, makers of a sleek, AI-powered at-home fitness device that delivers a personalized workout experience.

Now, consumers can use their HSA and FSA funds to purchase amp’s fitness device.

The premium fitness equipment company joins a growing list of Flex partners, which includes Echelon, recovery wellness tech brand Kineon, smart ring maker Ultrahuman, Forme, Centr, CorePower Yoga, Orangetheory, iFIT and Tempo

Behind amp is founder and entrepreneur Shalom Meckenzie, the largest shareholder in DraftKings. Last fall, the company officially launched amp for pre-orders.

“amp is redefining fitness with cutting-edge AI technology and award-winning design, creating a smarter, more personalized training experience that pushes limits and delivers results,” amp CPO Amir Levanon said. “Partnering with Flex empowers our customers to invest in their health seamlessly, using pre-tax dollars to access our smart fitness device without financial barriers.”

Unlike traditional at-home fitness equipment, which tends to be bulky, amp’s gym system is noticeably stylish and compact but mighty. It has a minimum weight of 5 pounds and the flexibility to level up to 100 pounds of digital resistance.

Users can easily adjust weight amounts in real time or manually, and there are three smart resistance modes available: Fixed, Band and Amplify. Fixed mode maintains constant weight throughout the entire range of motion, while Band adds resistance the further a user gets from the starting position. Amplify mode adds resistance when returning to the starting point. A subscription-based app guides users through gamified workouts and allows users to participate in challenges and compete on the leaderboard.

From gym floors to research labs, the fitness community continues to push the fight against ALS forward — because incurable is unacceptable

In 2005, fitness industry visionary Augie Nieto was diagnosed with ALS. A pioneer in exercise innovation, Nieto built Life Fitness into the world’s largest commercial fitness equipment company — only to face a disease that would rob him of movement.

But instead of surrendering, Nieto and his wife, Lynne, launched Augie’s Quest, declaring that incurable is unacceptable. For 20 years, the fitness industry — an ecosystem he helped shape — has been an unwavering force in this fight, raising over $36 million to fuel groundbreaking ALS research.

Now, as Augie’s Quest marks two decades of impact, the industry is stepping up once again, proving that its strength goes far beyond the gym floor.

20 Years of Progress

Since its inception, Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS has raised over $100 million. Under Augie Nieto’s leadership, Augie’s Quest and ALS Therapy Development Institute (TDI) have collectively raised over $200 million to help bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and real-world treatments.

The fitness industry, a community Augie helped shape, has played an instrumental role in this mission, raising more than $36 million and fueling some of the most pivotal research initiatives in ALS treatment. Through nationwide events, fundraisers and dedicated partnerships, fitness brands and industry leaders have rallied, making an undeniable difference.

One case in point: the BASH for Augie’s Quest, one of the most defining fundraising events in the fitness industry’s history. Traditionally held alongside the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) conference (now the Health & Fitness Association), the event united fitness professionals in a shared mission. Since its inaugural event in 2006, the BASH raised millions for ALS research while demonstrating the industry’s unwavering commitment to driving meaningful change. This year, Augie’s Quest is instead a proud sponsor of the Athletech cocktail party event on March 13.

What made this event particularly powerful is its ability to unite fierce competitors; many of whom, including Augie’s own business rivals, would rarely share the same space.Yet, at the BASH, all competition was set aside in the name of a greater cause. Over the years, it became a unifying force, proving that the fitness industry isn’t just about strength and endurance in the gym — it’s about standing together to improve and save lives.

A longtime supporter of the BASH event and Augie’s Quest, The Bay Club, headquartered in San Francisco, has gone beyond underwriting VIP parties, continuously championing the cause through auctions, supporting New York marathon runners, and direct contributions.

Matthew Stevens, President and CEO, emphasizes the importance of honoring industry pioneers, saying, “Respecting the past — especially the founders of our industry — is imperative to the core foundation of Bay Club and should be for our entire industry. The fact that Augie Nieto, one of our industry’s visionaries, was stricken with this awful disease means we can never forget his contributions.”

Another fitness industry leader that has been deeply committed to Augie’s Quest since day one is Life Time. In September 2024, the brand launched GO90 for Augie’s Quest, a nationwide 90-minute workout. The event united its athletic clubs across the country in a powerful display of support, raising substantial funds to propel ALS research forward.

When asked why Life Time supported the cause, Bahram Akradi, Founder, Chairman and CEO of the company simply said, “Because I loved Augie.”

Over the years, Crunch Fitness has also played a significant role in supporting Augie’s Quest through national fundraising campaigns, including Love Your Muscles, involvement in Clubs for the Quest, and more. Their in-club activations and community-driven events have generated substantial funds, demonstrating how local gym communities can rally together for a greater cause.

“We’ve been honored to support Augie’s Quest over the years to help amplify awareness and support for ALS research and to continue Augie Nieto’s mission,” said Jim Rowley, Crunch CEO.

Another major contributor is Orangetheory Fitness, which has donated over $10 million through fundraising campaigns and direct contributions. A defining moment came in 2018 when the brand raised $4 million in just three weeks through its #IBurn4ALS campaign. Zumba and Newtown Athletic Club have also been extremely supportive – raising over $1 million and just under $1 million, respectively.

“Anything that robs people’s ability to move is worth fighting against,” said Zumba’s Creator and Co-founder, Alberto Perez. “At Zumba, movement is our language, our joy, and our way of bringing people together. We support Augie’s Quest because their groundbreaking work will help to restore hope and mobility to those affected by ALS. Together, we can dance toward a future without this disease.”

The fitness industry’s collective contributions have directly supported life-changing ALS treatments, including Tegoprubart – a promising therapy designed to slow disease progression by reducing neuroinflammation and protecting motor neurons from damage.

What’s Next? A Simple Yet Powerful Way to Join the ALS Research Fight

As Augie’s Quest marks its 20th anniversary, the question isn’t just how far the movement has come —  it’s how much further it can go. The fitness industry has already played a pivotal role in funding groundbreaking ALS research, but there is still work to be done.

The good news? The next step is already in motion, and it’s one the entire industry can take part in with minimal lift and maximum impact.

In May – ALS Awareness Month – based on the success of the Life Time GO90 event, and also on the sobering fact that every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS, Augie’s Quest is launching a nationwide fundraiser and inviting all clubs and studios to join.

It’s simple. Participating clubs will host special 90-minute classes, featuring their most engaging instructors and dynamic programming.

The initiative is designed to be turnkey for gym owners – clubs can set their own entry fees ($25-$50), organize friendly competitions, offer incentives, and engage their communities in a fun yet impactful way. Augie’s Quest provides a customizable toolkit, making it easy for clubs of all sizes to get involved.

With many gyms already signing on, this is a tangible, industry-wide opportunity to continue Augie’s mission and accelerate the search for a cure. For those who haven’t yet participated in Augie’s Quest, this is the perfect way to start.

Says Rowley: “We’re excited to unite the Crunch community this May with this special programming to not only honor the incredible 20-year impact of Augie’s Quest but also inspire an effort among our members and the fitness industry to drive meaningful change.”

Augie’s Quest has always been about resilience, innovation, and the collective power of a community … the very things that define the fitness industry.

Rowley echoes this, saying, “Partnering with Augie’s Quest reinforces the importance of community and making a difference, and we’re proud to continually support this cause.”

For two decades, this industry has done just that, proving that its impact extends far beyond the gym floor. The millions raised have not just funded research; they have accelerated treatments, changed lives, and brought hope to thousands.

But the fight is far from over. ALS remains an incurable disease – but, as Nieto believed, incurable is unacceptable. Now, as Augie’s Quest embarks on its next chapter, the fitness industry has more opportunities than ever to make a difference.

As Stevens so perfectly puts it, “Our work here is – and continues to be – a tribute to the sacrifices Augie made for all of us in this amazing industry we get to call a career.”

For more information on how to participate in the 90-Minute Class Fundraising Campaign or contribute to the cause, visit Augie’s Quest.

iFIT has U.S. Ski & Snowboard in gold medal position from a health and fitness standpoint after completing its cutting-edge gym re-design

iFIT is doing everything imaginable to help the nation’s top skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes with confidence while also providing top quality training content for athletes everywhere.

In late 2023, the global fitness technology company inked a partnership with U.S. Ski & Snowboard. The project included a complete re-design of the USANA Center of Excellence’s gym with new Freemotion cardio and strength equipment, as well as select NordicTrack cardio machines, for nearly 250 elite athletes and staff.

“This partnership is a natural fit because both iFIT and U.S. Ski & Snowboard are deeply committed to excellence, innovation and the progression of athletic performance,” said Mark Watterson, iFIT Commercial CEO. “For iFIT, this collaboration aligns with our purpose to serve athletes of all levels and abilities by providing them with cutting-edge cardio and strength equipment and immersive training experiences.”

The Physical Remodel

The iFIT makeover began with adding state-of-the-art equipment like the Incline Trainer and Relfex treadmills, Freemotion Glute-Ham Developers for lower body strength, and more to the Center of Excellence gym. The Dual Cable Cross, a favorite among the trainers, accompanied those machines as well to facilitate strength and mobility exercises.

“The Freemotion Dual Cable Cross is a standout piece in this retrofit,” said Watterson. “Its versatility allows athletes to perform a wide range of functional, multi-plane movements, making it ideal for strength, stability and power training. The ability to adjust resistance and specific positioning ensures athletes can customize their workouts to target specific muscle groups relevant to skiing and snowboarding.”

The Incline Trainer represented another new supplement to the floor, which permits cardio training while simulating mountain-like conditions. New cardio bikes were installed as well infused with engaging and informative visual content.

“I utilize the iFIT bikes with athletes the most out of all the cardio equipment because the screens allow me to see their power output as well as their RPM, and their distance,” said Maddison Beck, Athletic Development Coordinator at U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “I can individualize each athlete’s program while allowing them to have that individual feedback.”

“These additions are particularly exciting because they cater to the specialized needs of elite athletes preparing for world-class competition,” Watterson said.

Freemotion also dropped in several of its versatile FitRigs during the remodel. Users can go from squatting to core-strengthening leg raises to simple pullups in a matter of seconds with the equipment. Foreste Peterson, the Athletic Development Coordinator at U.S. Ski & Snowboard, went as far as to call it the “one stop shop.”

“You literally can do everything there,” Peterson went on. “You can do any kind of lower body move, lunges, and then go right into a core exercise. You can literally target your whole body.”

Top Content Made By Top Athletes & Trainers

iFIT also recently introduced its Train for the Slopes workout series as part of the partnership. iFIT Trainers Knox Robinson and Shannon Cooper collaborated with professional snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis and alpine skier Ryan Cochran-Siegle to assist athletes in their training both from a physical and mental perspective.

In the content series, the four experts lead individuals through cardio, flexibility, balance and HIIT workouts to prepare for their trips up and down the mountain. Tricks and tips from years of experience are made available throughout the series as well.

A Partnership that Shreds

Both U.S. Ski & Snowboard and iFIT have benefited from the partnership thus far through new events and collaborations. As competitions have taken off for the season, seeing the athletes perform at their peak and bringing their expertise to the iFIT platform for the masses to enjoy has been equally pleasing.

“The equipment that iFIT produces matches our desire to push the boundaries to help our athletes get fitter, stronger, and faster,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, President & CEO, U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “We love this relationship with iFIT where we fully outfitted the gym with all the new equipment. There was a lot of excitement both from our high performance experts, and doctors, and medical practitioners. It’s really revolutionized this center.”

iFIT understands that the difference between a stuck landing and a wipeout or the between gold, silver and bronze, is sometimes made in the gym rather than on the mountain. They’re eager to provide an edge that might put each former more within reach.

“By modernizing the gym with state-of-the-art Freemotion cardio and strength equipment, we’re providing tools that not only enhance physical preparation but also ensure efficient recovery and injury prevention,” said Watterson. “Cutting-edge equipment isn’t just a luxury — it’s a necessity to keep athletes competitive and ensure they’re operating at their peak.”

After three years of research, Escape Fitness is unveiling the Octagon Load, a results-maximizing strength training system for commercial operators

A new strength and functional training system has been unveiled by Escape Fitness, setting a new standard for fitness facilities looking to stand out amid the competition: Octagon Load.

There’s no better time, as survey after survey highlights the growing interest in strength training, putting gyms in a prime position to adapt. With Load, Escape Fitness delivers the ultimate trifecta: faster results, less equipment and a smaller footprint—leading to efficient strength training that drives revenue and boosts engagement.

The new equipment is currently being piloted at Gold’s Gym, California,  and The Waterfront Leisure Complex, Greenock, U.K., managed by Inverclyde Leisure.

“Strength training is no longer the reserve of elite athletes or bodybuilders; it’s a cornerstone of fitness for people of all ages and abilities,” Escape Fitness USA CEO Matthew Januszek says. “After three years of research and conversations with leading operators, athletes and coaches, built on a lifetime of experience working in the fitness industry, Escape Fitness has created a pioneering circuit-based system for the general population that efficiently stimulates muscle.”

Escape Fitness USA CEO Matthew Januszek | credit: Escape Fitness

Designed and manufactured at its Escape Technologies facility in the U.K. and overseen by its team of specialist engineers, Load offers a new twist—combining the best of both worlds: the traditional plate-loaded concept and advanced variable resistance technology. The equipment features high-tensile resistance bands that provide continuous muscle engagement throughout movements, especially at the end range of motion. Escape Fitness points out that users also perform the movements in a standing position, activating the entire kinetic chain efficiently and safely.

“The hypertrophy benefits are outstanding,” Januszek adds. “Contributions from the variable resistance training include optimized muscle engagement, consistent muscle activation and faster muscle fatigue, all help to break through performance plateaus by challenging muscles in new ways whilst also limiting the risk of injury. The fact that all movements are performed in a standing position means glutes, abs, quads and hamstrings are also engaged – optimizing training time and providing a full-body workout.”

Load is also inclusive to fitness consumers of all levels and abilities, as its design supports multiple stance positions and grip adjustments, allowing users to target specific muscle groups. The system is equally mindful of those rehabbing an injury and is suitable for more mature fitness consumers with a variable resistance system allowing controlled load adjustments that minimize injury risks.

For gym and health club operators, Load offers five stations—Lift, Drive, Row, Squat, and Press—each of which can function as a standalone unit or be connected, with options for integrated equipment storage. Weatherproofing is available for facilities with outdoor space, and frames can be customized to reflect brand identity.

“Working with one of the world’s most experienced and respected fitness educators, Tommy Matthews, we have developed a comprehensive suite of Load education materials available both in-person and digitally,” Januszek adds. “We are also developing content for our Mars digital training system, so users will be able to access digital content anytime to help them execute movements safely and effectively.

Researchers are exploring how neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) could amplify strength gains when combined with traditional resistance training

If building muscle was as simple as sending electrical signals to your body, would you offer it to your members and clients?

A new meta-analysis suggests that adding neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to resistance training could enhance muscle growth and strength gains, offering an interesting glimpse into the potential future of performance training.

While NMES has long been used in rehabilitation and recovery settings, this new research published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology suggests its benefits may extend beyond therapy and into the gym. With fitness enthusiasts and athletes constantly looking for an edge, could NMES be the next evolution in strength training?

What is NMES?

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), also known as electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), works by using electrical currents to trigger muscle contractions, mimicking the natural signals sent by the brain. While many associate NMES primarily with rehabilitation and recovery, the technology has a much deeper and more complex history — one that dates back centuries.

The foundation for electrical muscle stimulation can be traced back to Luigi Galvani in 1761, who was the first to provide scientific evidence that electrical currents could activate muscles. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, researchers continued to study and document the electrical properties that generate muscle movement, discovering that electrical stimulation could induce long-term physiological changes in muscle tissue.

In medicine, EMS is used in rehabilitation settings and within medical applications to prevent muscle atrophy, particularly in individuals suffering from neuromuscular imbalances, mobility restrictions, or prolonged inactivity due to injury or illness.

NMES has also been utilized to aid recovery after musculoskeletal injuries — including damage to bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons — and even as a tool for individuals with chronic conditions, such as cancer or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or post-stroke patients.

Despite its use in medical and therapeutic settings, NMES has largely remained on the sidelines of active strength training — until now.

Breaking Down the Study

Researchers at the University of Texas at El Paso conducted a meta-analysis, examining data from multiple studies that investigated NMES in combination with traditional resistance training. The review included more than a dozen studies and focused on individuals who performed weight training exercises — such as bench presses and squats —  while using NMES devices in comparison to those who did the same weight training routines without NMES.

The key takeaway? Participants who combined NMES with resistance training saw greater muscle growth and strength gains compared to those who trained without electrical stimulation.

Additional findings included:

  • Training duration matters: Training periods for participants ranged from two to 16 weeks. Participants who trained with NMES for longer periods experienced more significant improvements in muscle mass and strength.
  • How it works: NMES stimulates muscles to contract involuntarily, bypassing the brain’s traditional neural activation pathways and creating an additional stimulus on top of voluntary contractions.
  • Potential implications: NMES could be particularly useful for individuals looking to break through plateaus or maximize gains in a shorter time frame.

Dr. Sudip Bajpeyi, lead researcher explains, “Under normal conditions, the brain activates muscles by sending signals through the nervous system. NMES mimics this process by delivering external electrical currents to the nerves, causing muscles to contract without direct input from the brain.”

Co-authors on the study are Gabriel Narvaez, a recently graduated master’s student in kinesiology, and Jehu N. Apaflo, a doctoral student in interdisciplinary health sciences.

Bajpeyi is the director of the Metabolic Nutrition and Exercise Research (MiNER) lab at UTEP, where his team studies how NMES or other interventions can improve physical and metabolic health.

Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, Bajpeyi is currently investigating how NMES might help regulate blood glucose levels and reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes.

“NMES has great potential for improving metabolic health by building muscle mass, which can help the body process blood glucose more effectively,” he states.

The Future of Strength Training?

NMES is not a new technology, but its integration into active strength training poses some interesting implications. As wearable technology and AI-driven training platforms continue to make headway, is it possible that NMES could become a standard tool in personalized fitness programs? Could we see gyms incorporating electrically enhanced strength training zones? Will connected fitness devices integrate NMES into smart resistance training programs?

For now, these and other questions remain as research continues into NMES and its many possible real-world applications.

The rise of AI-driven personal training, smart fitness wearables and adaptive fitness technology is making workouts more tailored and accessible than ever before. In fact, the wearable devices segment is predicted to grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period owing to its ability to provide continuous health and fitness monitoring, such as heart rate, steps, and activity levels, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with limited mobility or specialized health needs.
  • Growing Demand for Remote and Virtual Fitness Solutions
With the expansion of digital fitness, on-demand content, mobile apps and virtual coaching platforms, individuals with disabilities now have more flexible options to engage in fitness.

According to the report, North America is expected to hold the largest revenue share during the forecast period, driven by high awareness of adaptive fitness, a strong healthcare infrastructure, supportive government policies promoting inclusivity, and the presence of major fitness platform providers offering accessible solutions for individuals with disabilities.

“We are certainly seeing technology play a bigger role,” says Patrick Lawrence, chief programs officer for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, San Diego. “When it comes to major fitness platform providers and adaptive equipment, one segment we’ve seen big growth in is electric assist handcycles, which are very tech-reliant.”

Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific region is projected to experience the CAGR, fueled by increasing awareness of disability-inclusive fitness, rising investments in healthcare technology, and expanding smartphone penetration. As accessibility initiatives gain traction across countries in the region, fitness platforms are becoming more widely available to a larger population.

What’s Leading the Charge?

By Type: Exercise & Weight Loss Platforms Lead the Market

In 2024, the exercise and weight loss segment led the global fitness platforms for the adaptive fitness market in revenue, driven by a growing emphasis on physical health, mobility improvement, and weight management among individuals with disabilities. Awareness campaigns and specialized fitness programs tailored to their needs further contributed to this growth.

By Platform: iOS Takes the Lead

From a platform perspective, iOS emerged as the top-grossing segment, largely due to the widespread adoption of Apple devices in developed markets. iOS platforms also offer advanced accessibility features that cater specifically to individuals with disabilities, making them a preferred choice for fitness solutions.

By Device: Smartphones Are the Primary Access Point

Among devices, smartphones emerged as the top-performing segment, thanks to their convenience, portability, and widespread availability. With high smartphone penetration, users can easily access fitness platforms anytime and anywhere, making mobile-based solutions the most practical and widely used option for individuals with disabilities.

With continued advancements in technology, increased advocacy and growing investment in adaptive fitness solutions, the fitness platforms market for individuals with disabilities is poised for sustained growth.

“The opportunity for continued and increased connectivity globally is a win,” says Lawrence. “The advent of social media made the world a smaller place and there is an increase in the idea that people with disabilities can have an active lifestyle. I think platforms that cater to individuals with disabilities have a promising future.”

The trainer-led ruck Clubs will launch this spring for both MADabolic members and non-members

Strength and conditioning franchise MADabolic is teaming up with GoRuck, a global leader in rucking gear and experiences, to launch weekly ruck clubs at select MADabolic locations nationwide.

Rucking—a low-impact weighted backpack workout known for highly effective results—has been gaining traction as a go-to for active recovery, posture and core stability improvement. It’s also an ideal addition to MADabolic’s scalable approach to fitness, where members are encouraged to train four times a week, with 1-2 days dedicated to active recovery and another 1-2 for full rest.

The North Carolina-founded strength training franchise has cultivated a devoted base of those seriously committed to reaching their fitness goals and noted last November that it’s on track to hit the 50-location mark by mid-year.

“Partnering with GoRuck was a natural fit for us,” MADabolic co-founder and chief training officer Kirk DeWaele said. “Rucking is the perfect way for our clients to take their functional strength training outside of the gym and put it to work in both a practical and social environment. It’s challenging but inclusive, and it aligns beautifully with our mission to promote a structured and sustainable approach to strength and conditioning.”

The trainer-led ruck clubs will launch at participating MADabolic locations this spring, welcoming both members and non-members—potentially pushing rucking further into the mainstream. It’s a move that aligns with the vision of GoRuck founder Jason McCarthy, a former U.S. Army Green Beret, who predicted last year that rucking will soon become bigger than running.

a smiling headshot of GoRuck founder Jason McCarthy
Jason McCarthy (Credit: GoRuck)

“The number one reason is because it’s better for more people,” McCarthy told Athletech News. “I think running is great. The problem with running is multifold, though. The rate of injury is high – it’s the number one cause of injury in special forces. The load onto your body per strike is eight times your body weight. When walking it’s 2.7, and when rucking, it’s your body weight plus the weight of the ruck times 2.7. It’s fractional in terms of the (additional) load or the taxation on your body. If you can walk, you can ruck. And it’s completely scalable – 10 pounds is rucking and 100 pounds is rucking.”

GoRuck event operations director Bianca Salcido stated that the American-born company is thrilled to partner with MADabolic.

“They’ve built an incredible network around sustainable, strength-focused training, and we’re excited to extend that energy into the outdoors with rucking,” Salcido said. “It’s a fantastic way to connect with others, build mental and physical toughness, and enjoy active recovery.”

Meta to Muscle: A new fitness app co-founded by a former Meta engineer and Strava designer says its AI (and affordability) can compete with human coaches

A new strength training app founded by a former Meta engineer and Strava designer has hit the fitness scene right in time for January fitness goals: Kiwi Fitness.

The AI-powered app aims to be an affordable alternative to hiring a personal trainer, offering personalized workout plans, progress tracking and adaptable training sessions—all driven by machine learning algorithms.

“Strength training can feel isolating and overwhelming, especially for beginners,” Kiwi Fitness co-founder and former Strava designer Olia Birulia said. “With Kiwi Fitness, we aim to connect gym-goers and create a supportive environment that fosters motivation and accountability. We’re taking lessons from successful social fitness platforms and applying them to strength training.”

Currently, Kiwi Fitness considers fitness goals, available equipment, and progress tracking, offering adjustments along the way. In the future, the app plans to introduce socially connected features, including local gym communities, leaderboards and group challenges.

“Gyms aren’t just places to lift weights; they’re potential hubs for connection,” Olia said. “By building these features, we hope to inspire users to support each other in reaching their goals.”

Kiwi Fitness is running a promotion this month, during which annual subscribers can receive 50% off and a free Kiwi Fitness water bottle for $59.99.

“Our vision is to make strength training approachable and effective for everyone,” Kiwi Fitness co-founder and former Meta engineer Justin Thelukai said. “Using cutting-edge AI, we’re delivering an experience that’s more dynamic and responsive than what most human coaches can offer.”

The fitness app space shows no signs of slowing down and is projected to grow by $55.86 billion in just a few short years, fueled by consumer interest in health management. It’s also become a competitive battleground, with fitness app Ladder recently accusing connected fitness giant Peloton of allegedly copying its strength training platform.

The fitness entrepreneur has acquired a majority stake in the high-intensity group fitness studio franchise

Fitness entrepreneur David “Patch” Patchell-Evans has acquired a majority stake in Regymen, the high-intensity group fitness studio franchise. Over the past five years, GoodLife Fitness has integrated Regymen Fitness studios into 12 of its locations in Canada, demonstrating the success of the boutique studio’s model within the larger fitness facilities. This partnership has now evolved into full-fledged ownership, as Patch expands his role within Regymen, positioning it for rapid growth.

“Patch’s involvement in Regymen is a game changer,” said Leah Seacrest, Vice President of Franchising at Regymen Fitness. “He is one of the top leaders in the fitness industry and brings an entirely new set of skills and resources to help us continue to grow the brand.”

Patch has experience in scaling fitness franchises, notably supporting the expansion of Oxygen Yoga & Fitness to more than 130 locations across North America. His vision for Regymen includes a similar turnkey franchise system to attract new investors and operators.

“The franchise model is turn-key and is supported by a strong team of industry professionals that are focused on helping franchisees grow their business both here in the U.S. and internationally,” said Patch. “A Regymen franchise costs less to build than comparable models, and it is a fantastic opportunity for entrepreneurs looking for a solid investment opportunity. I’m very happy to share that Regymen is open for business.”

Regymen Fitness is known for its dynamic, science-backed workout programs. The brand’s two signature workouts, Burn and Build, provide high-energy, structured training sessions that cater to different fitness levels.

Currently, Regymen operates 23 studios, including six franchises, one corporate store, four licensed stores, and 12 integrated within GoodLife Fitness locations. Each Regymen unit operates in a 2,500-square-foot standalone space or as an integrated studio within existing fitness clubs, utilizing 1,500 to 2,000 square feet.

Pamela Light, a peri/menopause and hormone expert explains how fitness professionals can best help women navigate the complex time

Navigating the complexities of perimenopause and menopause can be daunting. Pamela Light, a peri/menopause expert and instructor at Bay Club, has over 30 years of experience as a health coach and wants to change the narrative around hormonal changes. In a conversation with Athletech News, Light advised fitness professionals on how best to help clients navigate their hormonal shifts.

Light emphasized the importance of quality over quantity when it comes to fitness.

“The days of quantity are over, and our workouts should be all about quality,” Light told ATN. “Choose exercises that work the large muscle groups all together like deadlifts, bench presses or squats and lunges. Make workouts efficient and effective, never long and complicated. This will maximize results while minimizing the time our cortisol is elevated.”

Strength training can provide enough demand for bones and muscles to get stronger without spiking cortisol, which is higher for perimenopausal women.

“It has also been found that resistance training increases cardiovascular fitness, which usually takes a hit in the menopause transition,” Light added. “Women also burn fat for fuel while resistance training, the ultimate bonus!”

All About Balance

Pamela’s approach to lifestyle changes is centered around moderation and balance.

“Women in menopause transform into Goldilocks,” Light said.

“Balance becomes the rule in all things. I work with a load of smart, disciplined women who come to me discouraged because they can’t imagine eating less or exercising more. I help them edit their workouts down to find a good balance between hard, moderate and easy, as well as teach them how to fuel with real foods throughout the day. In addition to feeling better right away, they are on a sustainable path to help avoid all of the typical menopausal health pitfalls: inflammation, bone loss, fat gain, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.”

Light also advises fitness professionals to support their clients on more than just hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and supplements to alleviate their symptoms (note: This is not within a fitness professional’s scope of practice without the proper education, training and certification. Work in concert with allied health professionals when dealing with supplements or exogenous hormones).

“While HRT/supplements can set the stage for success, they aren’t a magic bullet,” Light said. “We need to guide our clients on how to move, eat and rest to increase and maintain bone and muscle mass, and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.”

She also shared her skepticism about fasting.

“To me, fasting reads like a gimmick or shortcut to avoid the effort, and patience involved in making a lasting lifestyle change,” Light said. “Often, women walk away from their fasting experiment with decreased heart health, lost muscle and bone, a slower metabolism, and feeling very discouraged. Why not put that same level of effort into eating quality foods, balancing our nutrients, and making movement a priority?”

Most fitness professionals and medical providers overlook the complexities of perimenopause and menopause. By focusing on strength training and balance in lifestyle habits, women can better navigate this transformative phase.
