The boots boast improved circulation and lymphatic drainage to improve recovery

Recovery is all the rage right now, and compression boots are no exception. The Therabody RecoveryAir Pro boots are designed to improve circulation and provide lymphatic drainage to speed up recovery and reduce muscle fatigue. With many boots on the market, how do the RecoveryAir Pro boots stack up?

Pros

The control device has simple navigational buttons that are easy to follow to customize your experience. The boots also have different modes, like recovery, warm-up, isolation, interval, and pro. Users can select a duration from 10 minutes to 90 minutes (or continual) and then pressures that range from 20 to 100 mmHg. The control device is also sleek and well-designed, so it blends into different design environments.

The four chambers of the boot were extremely effective, particularly with my feet. As a runner, my feet are often neglected, but the intense pressure and hold/release definitely reduced muscle fatigue. The boots apply graded pressure to the lower limbs, with gradual pressure from the feet to the groin. RecoveryAir also uses non-porous medical-grade material with internal overlapping chambers to prevent the boots from becoming smelly.

Apart from the physical benefits, it’s also nice to have a forced slowdown in the middle of one’s day. The physical act of sitting, setting a timer, and using the boots provides a nice respite for busy users. The Therabody “Fast Flush” Technology, however, allows the boots to inflate or deflate in just 60 seconds. Users can also control the pressure from the Therabody app from mobile devices.

Cons

The control device and the boots are not the easiest to lug around; you need a side table and a good chair (hopefully one that reclines) to effectively use the boots to their fullest extent.

It’s no secret that compression boots are expensive (around $1300), so taking them for a test run before fully investing is likely best. Similarly, ensuring that you can dedicate the time daily to the boots is important for long-term effect, particularly when training for a race.

Overall, the boots are a great investment if you train frequently or experience delayed onset muscle soreness. While the boots aren’t cheap, if you’re hoping to invest in the best compression boots, look no further.

The fitness icon has brought her workouts to the VR world

Jane Fonda’s influence on the fitness industry is undeniable. From the release of her first Jane Fonda’s Workout video in 1982 to her continued advocacy for movement, she has shaped how generations exercise. At 86, she’s embracing the latest fitness trend—virtual reality—through a partnership with Supernatural, the VR fitness platform available on Meta Quest. This collaboration brings a fresh take on her workout routines, merging nostalgia with technology to create an immersive exercise experience. So how does the workout stack up compared to traditional workouts and other digital offerings? Athletech News tested Supernatural x Jane Fonda to find out.

Pros

For those who grew up with Fonda’s workouts or are familiar with her influence, this VR series is a trip down memory lane—but with an upgrade. Supernatural recreates the aesthetic of her original programs, from the workout attire to the high-energy coaching style. The experience therefore feels both familiar and fresh.

The program includes a mixed selection of workouts to cater to different preferences and fitness levels, including Flow with Jane Fonda (a rhythmic, full-body cardio workout), Box with Jane Fonda & Ludacris (a high-energy boxing session), and Jane Fonda: Stretching (which is mobility-focused), among others.

One of the most fun aspects of Supernatural is that it places users in beautiful locations. From the peaks of Machu Picchu to the depths of Ethiopian volcanoes, the scenic backdrops add an element of escapism that makes the workouts feel more like an adventure than a chore.

The playlist for these workouts leans heavily into the retro theme, featuring tracks like Olivia Newton-John’s Physical. The combination of movement and music enhances motivation, making it easier to stay engaged.

One of the defining features of Fonda’s original workout tapes was her ability to motivate people through the screen. That same energy carries over into Supernatural, even through the headset.

Cons

The workout is only available on Supernatural, which means users need a Meta Quest headset and an active subscription to the platform, which could be prohibitive for those hesitant to invest. There may also be an adjustment period for those new to VR fitness. Sweating with the headset on is not the most pleasant experience, so if you’re planning on really pushing yourself to the limit, be prepared to frequently clean your headset.

While this series offers a well-rounded selection of workouts, those looking for advanced strength training, heavy resistance work, or highly structured endurance sessions may find the offerings too light. Supernatural is designed for immersive cardio and movement-focused fitness, so it may not replace a more traditional gym or studio-based routine.

Jane Fonda’s collaboration with Supernatural is a great blend of nostalgia and innovation. Whether you’re a longtime follower of her workouts or simply curious about the intersection of VR and exercise, it’s a unique experience worth exploring if you are willing to make the upfront investment.

Mark Hyman’s comprehensive health company is designed to take a more preventative approach to medicine

Dr. Mark Hyman is one of the most prominent proponents of functional medicine and a co-founder of Function Health, a membership-based diagnostic health platform company.  He was inspired to found the company based on the shortcomings of traditional healthcare. In an interview with Athletech News last fall, Dr. Hyman noted, “I saw that our system prioritized outdated processes and profits, with people only visiting doctors on a reactive basis. That experience inspired me and the other founding members of Function to create a new way for people to manage their health and live their best lives.”

Function Health has grown a lot since its founding in 2021, with its beta release in April 2023 and its expansion across the country. The company is expanding its focus on athletes, most recently with a partnership with the NBPA.

“Athletes push their limits daily, yet standard checkups often miss key performance insights,” Emeline Minor, who works in Special Projects at Function, told Athletech News. “Cortisol and testosterone impact recovery, while glucose and insulin regulate sustained energy. Monitoring these markers helps athletes train smarter and avoid burnout. Key nutrients like vitamin D aid muscle repair and injury prevention, benefiting anyone engaged in physical activity.”

To see what the future of preventative and performance-based health might hold, I decided to test Function Health by going to a nearby Quest Diagnostics. I took the tests over two separate sessions to get the results of more than 100 biomarkers for a view of my health across many dimensions, from my heart, hormones, immunity, thyroid, and more. So how did Function stack up compared to other preventative health services?

Pros

For $499 per year, members get two rounds of testing: an initial assessment and then another test three to six months later to see how their numbers are evolving. After your initial signup, you are asked to give a detailed summary of your medical history and medications. Next, you schedule your tests at Quest Diagnostics. I also appreciated the text reminders from Function in the days before the assessment on how best to prepare for the tests.

While Quest Diagnostics is not as comfortable as some other options for blood draws (for example, for InsideTracker, a professional came to my apartment), there are many locations around major cities, and there was almost no wait time.

For those who are squeamish with blood draws, the first round of testing required nearly six vials of blood. Because of the draining nature of such a blood draw, Function splits them into two separate appointments scheduled several days apart. The service recommended not doing any physical activity later that day, but I felt good enough to continue with my normal routine just a few hours later. For the second test, there was also a urine sample.

Although I had a handful of biomarkers out of range, my biological age was still a fair amount younger than my calendar age, which helped put my results into perspective and prevented any panic while I waited for the physician’s notes, which took a little more than a week. In addition, for the biomarkers out of range, clicking on each result yielded a summary of what it meant, its causes, foods to eat, foods to limit, supplements to take, and more. I thought the website’s design was fairly easy to use and click through, although I would have appreciated a snapshot view of all the biggest next steps for me to follow to improve my metrics.

One big benefit of Function is that the company essentially subsidizes the costs of all these tests; the phlebotomist at Quest Diagnostics told me that these tests normally cost far more than what Function charges. Although the company does not accept insurance, it is FSA/HSA eligible.

Cons

A small downside to the test is certain restrictions must be taken before, which is admittedly fairly typical of all blood tests. Users are not allowed to work out for 24 hours, take supplements for 72 hours, or eat certain foods, like fish (in case it spikes certain biomarker levels in your bloodstream) for a few days before. While a minor inconvenience, it’s worth calling out the small changes needed prior to the exam.

One other downside is the timing disparity between getting the results back and the clinician’s notes back, which can be up to 2 weeks. The clinician’s notes add more context to your results, and if any results are urgent, Function will call you immediately. With the results come recommendations about the best foods to eat, potential lifestyle changes, and any recommended follow-up tests. For those anxious to receive their results, the timing difference may cause some short-term panic, perhaps brought about by googling or WebMD searches.

I asked physicians unassociated with the brands about my results, and they noted that some of the biomarkers used were newer, without as much clinical research backing them. For example, measures like HDL Large, LDL Medium, and LDL Small were all part of the heart health measurements but represent newer ways to understand cholesterol. According to Dr. Hyman, this is the “most critical test” for understanding cholesterol health. However, some of these other physicians recommended focusing more on the more standard cholesterol numbers due to their proven nature. I wish there had been a clearer way to view which biomarkers were more clinically

Overall, Function is likely best for those who have existing medical conditions or deficiencies and want to track their progress, driving towards improvements on these health goals.

The device is a motorized ab wheel that can be used for full-body workouts

Finding a new workout tool that can truly shake up your workout is hard. ZeroWheel has innovated the traditional ab wheel with a motor to train arms, quads, glutes, and more. The device’s powerful motor offers five levels of resistance, with LED lights on either side of the wheel to signal its various modes. In today’s fitness landscape, where there are new gadgets released every week, can ZeroWheel really enhance your next workout?

Pros

ZeroWheel’s different modes really set it apart, which cater to different fitness levels and goals. Springback is an assistance mode for those newer to ZeroWheel and perhaps working out, bracing your body weight, and springing you back from an extension. Quicksand is lower impact, and works through eccentric and concentric movements, fighting against your velocity. This mode is one of the key differentiators of a product like ZeroWheel compared to a traditional ab wheel, as it adds extra resistance for seasoned athletes. Similarly, Aero propels you for extra movement, which is perfect for aerobic workouts and cardio. The most difficult mode is burn, which generates a significant amount of torque for a very difficult workout. These modes create versatility that differentiates the ZeroWheel from most other strength devices.

Credit: ZeroWheel

ZeroWheel’s battery life can last around a week or for four hours of continuous use. The device’s app is also a great assistant for workouts, with a sleek UI/UX and pre-programmed workouts. The app has goals displayed, such as number of reps of particular movements, streaks, and the frequency with which you want to accomplish those goals. With the app, you can “build” your workouts by stacking different exercises to take the guesswork out of your daily plan. You can adjust the mode, number of reps, and exercises to customize your workout. ZeroWheel has also been used in commercial establishments: fitness classes programmed around the device.

Cons

Although the company states that ZeroWheel can be used on any smooth surface with enough friction to prevent slipping, this may be more difficult in practice. First, one may not want to use the device on nice wallpaper or painted walls in one’s home. Second, a non-smooth surface may cause cosmetic wear and tear to the device. If you have a smooth surface in your home or, for commercial use, durable floors or walls, this may not be a problem.

The device is not particularly small or portable. Although it is only 12 lbs., it is large enough that it requires a small gym bag to bring around. This is not an issue for commercial establishments, but it may be for consumers who want to bring the device to a gym. In addition, ZeroWheel is $795, a pricey device for a core-focused workout. While it can certainly be used for leg workouts with the right wall surfaces, I found myself a little nervous about using the device on my apartment walls. However, floor exercises still burned my shoulders and abs due to the device’s unique modes,

Overall, if you’re looking for a new take on a traditional fitness device that will level up your workouts, ZeroWheel is a great option. For commercial establishments that want a new class format, ZeroWheel might provide the variability and customizable difficulty that would keep

The brand’s workout platform offers a wide variety of pre-recorded classes, from yoga to running to sleep therapy

Alo Moves is an online library of wellness classes created by the trendy athleisure brand. Beyond just HIIT, Pilates, yoga and strength training, Alo Moves also offers nutrition, breathwork and meditation classes. With so many online workout platforms, how does Alo Moves stack up? Athletech News put the platform to the test.

Pros

One of the big benefits of Alo Moves is its sheer range of over 2,500 classes. Alo Moves’ yoga classes include hatha, kids yoga, kundalini, prenatal and restorative classes. Although created by Alo Yoga, the platform is so much more than just yoga. Its fitness classes include extensive offerings across barre, dance, gym, HIIT, Pilates, running, sculpt and strength. The platform is not just about fitness; it even offers mindfulness classes including reiki, sound therapy, cycle syncing, personal growth and sleep guidance. The platform also shares recipes, from Nori Salad Wraps to a Green Lemonade Detox Juice.

The platform is easy to navigate, whether the user is browsing or looking for a specific class. Alo Moves also offers the option to take each class with or without music, which can make or break a game for some users. It’s also easy to navigate based on difficulty level, duration, instructor or specific intention. For example, users can filter based on skills such as arm balances, backbends or inversions. Alo Moves also offers series like 5-Day Sculpt Strength or a 4-week run series to build endurance. The platform is aesthetically pleasing, with beautiful backgrounds and settings to transport users from their living rooms.

Alo Moves is reasonably priced for its offerings, at $12.99 per month or $129.99 annually. It comes with a 14-day free trial so users can try out the platform before committing.

Cons

The platform does not offer live classes, which might be a dealbreaker for those who need additional motivation. Although a good problem to have, the sheer variety of classes may also bring about decision paralysis for indecisive users who want more streamlined options.

Although the platform offers plenty that is not yoga, if you have no interest in yoga or yoga-adjacent activities like Pilates or barre, Alo Moves may not be your best option. It also does not offer fully personalized plans, but you can use the playlist feature to customize routines.

Overall, Alo Moves is a versatile workout platform with a wide breadth of options, a perfect holiday gift for a fitness enthusiast.

Therabody’s base model is a perfect holiday gift for a loved one who wants an effective but simpler (and more affordable) massage gun

As the flagship massage device from wellness tech company Therabody, Theraguns are popular tools for relieving muscle pain and soreness, reducing tension and improving circulation.

Therabody’s Theragun Prime model is an easy-to-use, more affordable version of the tool, perfect for a loved one or family member who might want a simpler way to access percussive therapy.

Athletech News tested the Theragun Prime to see how it compares to other percussive therapy devices and massage guns on the market.

Pros

The Theragun Prime has five speeds that you can either control with the app or on the gun itself. It’s powerful, with speeds up to 2400 PPM, along with a 120-minute total battery life and the quintessential Theragun ergonomic triangle multi-grip.

At $299 (on sale for $199) the Theragun Prime is significantly cheaper than other Theragun models, compared to the $599 Pro Plus and the $399 Prime Plus. The Prime is also the same weight (and much of the same functionality) as the Elite, at 2.2 pounds, but is around $100 less expensive.

man uses a Theragun on bicep
credit: Therabody

The Prime is much quieter than other massage guns on the market, with a scratch-resistant design perfect for gym visits. It comes with four attachment heads, including the Heated Percussive Plus Attachment, the Standard Ball Plus Attachment, the Dampener Plus Attachment, and the Wedge Plus Attachment, which is perfect for specific areas around the shoulder blades and IT bands.

I found that the Theragun Prime was perfect for workout warmups and recovery, and using it 3-4 times a week for 5-10 minutes significantly reduced pain and soreness, even from working at a desk. It was surprisingly easy to reach even the upper back due to the ergonomic and triangular design of the massage gun.

woman uses Theragun on thigh

Cons

With only four head attachments, the Theragun Prime has fewer than other models, which could come into play for those who want to target very specific areas of the body. It’s also not the most portable, particularly compared to the Mini, which is perfect to stick in a gym bag.

In addition, while the Therabody app is a comprehensive and well-designed tool, for those who want to use the Prime in a standalone manner, the product isn’t as comprehensive as the Theragun Pro Plus’s screen.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Theragun Prime is a more affordable tool for percussive therapy, with a quieter and more effective design than other models. Right now, it’s $199 (compared to $299 normally) for the holiday season, and it’s HSA and FSA-friendly.

The mask targets acne, inflammation and scarring with red and blue light therapy

Striving for clear, healthy skin without expensive clinical treatments can feel out of reach. At-home LED light therapy masks, like the Omnilux CLEAR, however, has made high-quality skincare more accessible. The FDA-cleared device targets acne, inflammation, and scarring with red and blue light therapy. After putting the Omnilux Clear to the test, here’s how it stacks up as a potential game-changer in one’s skincare routine.

Pros
The Omnilux Clear mask combines blue and red light for effectiveness. Blue light kills acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface, while red light inflammation, calms redness and promotes healing by stimulating collagen production. Unlike some masks, Omnilux Clear is gentle on the skin, with minimal side effects apart from some mild redness.

The mask is also made of a flexible silicone material that is comfortable and perfect for traveling. Wearing it for 10 minutes, 3-4 times a week can have a significant impact on reduced acne and improved skin texture. While the $395 price tag may seem steep, professional acne treatments can run $200 or more per session. It’s also great to have on-demand for skin issues that pop up unexpectedly.

Cons
At $395, the Omnilux Clear is more expensive than many other LED therapy masks. However, its efficacy and acne-fighting focus may justify the price for those with pesky skin issues. One callout is that you cannot separate the blue and red light, so if you get your breakouts under control, you may not have a use for the mask anymore. Blue light is largely recommended for short-term use because it can dehydrate the skin.

Unlike competitors, like the Therabody TheraFace Mask, which has more protection around the eyes, protective eyewear is also likely suggested for the Omnilux Clear, especially if you have sensitive eyes.

Overall, the Omnilux CLEAR LED Light Therapy Mask is a powerful tool for those looking to combat acne naturally and effectively. While the upfront cost may feel like a splurge, the long-term benefits of the Omnilux Clear after just 30-40 minutes of use per week may be worth it for those with persistent inflammatory skin issues.

With winter fast approaching, these apparel brands will keep you warm, rested and primed for winter workouts

Ready to stay warm and rested this fall and winter? Look no further than these eight brands that will ensure that your post-workout routine is as comfortable as your workout was tough. From established loungewear players like Lululemon to newer brands like Calia, this roundup has a variety of styles that are guaranteed to elevate your rest and recovery routine.

Lululemon

Lululemon needs no introduction when it comes to loungewear; the brand offers elegant, buttery-soft apparel perfect for post-workout recovery or day-to-day relaxation. The Lululemon Softstreme Perfectly Oversized Cropped Crew is made with the brand’s super soft signature fabric and has a dropped shoulder and cropped fit for effortless style. Although the top is thick it’s also breathable to prevent overheating. Pair the sweater with the Lululemon Restfeel slides, designed for comfort in between workouts. With a plush fit and a solid grip on the floor, the slides work well inside or outside the home.

Rhone

Rhone has emerged as one of the chicest activewear brands on the market, with breathable but durable fabrics. Although Rhone has historically focused on men’s activewear, it began selling women’s clothing earlier this year. The brand’s DreamGlow Mock Neck is as stylish as it is comfortable, perfectly paired with the DreamGlow Trousers. The Revive Longline Bra and Revive 7/8 Pocket Legging come in a handful of colors, from black to light pink, and are perfect for at-home yoga or lounging around. With Rhone, you’ll ready for last-minute meetings while lounging around the home post-workouts.

Dagsmejan

The Swiss sleep brand Dagsmejan is ready to ensure you get a good night of sleep heading into the hibernation months. The Nattwell Black-Out Sleep Mask is one of the best blackout masks, as it both ensures that no light sneaks in and prevents pressure around the eyes and nose. The brand’s Stay Cool Collection combines breathability and softness for a perfect night’s sleep. Although it’s warm enough to keep you cozy during cold evenings, the collection also prevents night sweating and overheating. To elevate your nighttime routine as the days get shorter, look no further than Dagsmejan.

Pacas

For the ultimate cozy outfits, Pacas loungewear and accessories are made from sustainably sourced Alpaca fiber and adapt to your body temperatures. The apparel keeps you warm without overheating and feels as luxurious as premium textiles. The Pimalpaca Open Front Cardigan and Lounge Pant Set are the perfect curling-up-on-the-couch outfit after a strenuous workout, while the brand’s socks are comfortable and breathable enough for everyday wear.

Represent 247

Represent, the British luxury streetwear brand, has launched its first-ever hiking collection under its 247 line, crafted to keep you warm during the late fall and winter months. Represent 247’s Fleece Hoodie has a thermoregulating gridded design for performance-grade warmth that will keep you comfortable and fashionable. The hoodie has a slightly oversized fit with the 247 logo for an elevated streetwear look while lounging. For British streetwear-inspired recovery apparel, Represent has you covered.

Fabletics

Fabletics continues to be one of the best high-value brands, and its loungewear is no exception. The Teddy Long Coat is fully lined for protection against cold temperatures but breathable enough for post-sweat sessions. Introduced by Khloe Kardashian, the coat can be dressed up or down and easily cleaned in the washing machine. Fabletics also offers a range of loungewear like hoodies, sweatshirts, and joggers for staying cozy during the late fall and winter.

The Walking Company’s Mosey Short Boots

The Walking Company’s Mosey Short Boot has a removable orthotic footbed to enough arch and ankle support while providing warmth and comfort. The boots are water-resistant, perfect for the snow or slush. The fleece-lined boots will keep your feet warm even in the coldest temperature but can withstand long walks with enough traction. If you need a new pair of boots to keep you moving during the winter, check out the Mosey Short Boot.

Stack Athletics

With the racquet sports craze occurring year-round, Stack Athletics’ Fall Collection will have you looking better than ever on and off the court. The brand’s Embrace Square Neck Tank and Embrace High-Rise Leggings are the perfect matching set, made with soft but responsive fabric. Although the brand markets to racquet sports, it’s also perfect for HIIT, yoga, or anything in between.

Calia

Calia, Carrie Underwood’s former brand sold exclusively at Dick’s Sporting Goods, packs a punch when it comes to high value. The Calia Women’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging are soft enough to sleep in, but high-performance enough for runs and the sweatiest HIIT workouts. The brand’s Inspire Scoop Neck Tank similarly provides enough support for low and medium-impact workouts but is comfortable enough for all-day wear.

ORB Innovations’ Sport Smart Mouthguard blends dental protection with advanced data monitoring

ORB Innovations has launched the ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard, which blends dental protection with advanced data monitoring to transform athletic performance. The mouthguard, which has undergone safety testing and secured FCC certification, provides athletes with a comprehensive view of their physical output, tracking over 20 metrics such as heart rate, movement patterns, and impact intensity. The wearable has already attracted partnerships with athletes like Olympic Gold Medalist Hilary Knight and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson.

Hilary Knight, forward for the Boston Fleet in the PWHL, told Athletech News about how she uses the device to optimize her training.

“I’m excited about a product like ORB joining the market just because there’s nothing like it that exists right now,” Knight said. “To be able to collect heart rate data and other important metrics for me to train and perform at my best—it’s just sheer alignment, and I’m really excited about this partnership.”

The ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard aims to provide athletes with real-time insights that were previously difficult to obtain, especially during off-season training when access to coaching staff can be limited.

“During the summer months, the off-season is where we get a lot of our work done, and my coaching staff isn’t necessarily right there in person,” Knight said. “To be able to sync up the workload and have them dial in my training to make sure it reflects what I’m doing on the ice is extremely important to continue elevating my game.”

Heart Rate Monitoring

One of the mouthguard’s most impactful features for Knight is its heart rate monitoring, which helps her adjust her training intensity.

“Obviously, having the heart rate component is huge, being able to measure the workload,” she said. The technology enables her and her coaching team to make data-driven adjustments, ensuring that her preparation aligns with her on-ice demands.

The mouthguard’s ability to monitor impacts is another critical aspect, especially for high-contact sports like hockey. It detects total linear g-force in three dimensions, providing valuable information for injury prevention.

“Injury prevention is huge,” Knight emphasized. “Staying healthy is the hardest thing to do. Having a full picture of your health and workload on and off the ice is essential. The ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard helps ensure I can approach the season in the best shape possible and bring what I’ve worked on in the off-season into play.”

Knight also highlighted the convenience of the device. “The ease of just being able to toss this in the bag and the accessibility has been easy,” she said. “I haven’t had a wearable, smart mouthguard before, and there are so many hidden points I have yet to tap into. I’m excited to see how this can impact my training and performance.”

The technology is not limited to hockey. Robinson has also adopted the ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard, praising its simplicity and impact on his training.

“As an elite athlete, I’m always looking for training techniques and tools to maximize my performance,” Robinson said. “The ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard allows me to approach training in a new way, utilizing data and technology. I love how easy it is to track my performance and analyze trends like movement and impact intensity, which helps me to be faster, stronger, and safer on the field.”

Knight sees a future where technology like the ORB Sport Smart Mouthguard becomes a standard tool in professional sports. “People are going to be extremely excited about a smart mouthguard like this, especially with the kind of data it can collect,” she said. “It will definitely be a competitive advantage.”

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 is likely the most high-tech thermoregulation and biometric sleep-tracking device on the market

Eight Sleep has generated a lot of buzz in the wellness world for its revolutionary approach to sleep health. Recognizing the power of heating and cooling to unlock better sleep, Eight Sleep Founder Matteo Franceschetti released the Pod in 2019. This year, Eight Sleep released the highly anticipated Pod 4, which has the latest and greatest technology for thermoregulation and biometric tracking.

A super-powered mattress topper that can transform a normal bed into a sleep improvement device, the Pod 4 has more features than ever. Eight Sleep has invested in AI, improving its Autopilot feature (which adjusts one’s bed temperature throughout the night and tracks sleep quality). But is the high price of the Pod 4 worth it? Athletech News put the Eight Sleep Pod 4 to the test, comparing it against competitors and previous models.

Pros

The Pod 4 is a high-tech mattress cover, which is particularly convenient for those who want thermoregulation and biometric tracking technology but don’t want to buy a whole new mattress. Unlike previous Pod versions, the small tubes and wires throughout the device are undetectable when users lie down.

What sets Eight Sleep apart from other bed-cooling systems is that it’s powered with AI through its Autopilot feature. The technology tracks your sleep and adjusts throughout the night to your body temperature. Upon setting up your Eight Sleep account, users put in their age, biological age, if they share their bed, and sleep schedule.

Compared to previous versions of the device, the Pod 4’s setup was faster and easier. One key difference of the new version is that it no longer recommends hydrogen peroxide for setup, just water. It was nice not to have to buy an additional item to get started.

Eight Sleep provides very simple instructions on the app for setting up. Users just need to strip the bed and stretch the topper across the mattress. The tubing that connects the mattress topper to the Hub (which stores water and powers the device) is thin and flexible enough that it can weave around a headboard and around other furniture. Although the Hub is large, its design is sleek enough that it will blend into most bedroom aesthetics easily. The Hub also holds around two liters of water, which means it only requires replacement every 2-3 months.

The cover heats and cools from 110 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with each person sleeping on the bed able to set their preferred temperature. Thirty minutes before one’s scheduled bedtime, the Pod 4 gets to work preparing its temperature. Users can set the temperature anywhere between 55 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit either through the app or by tapping the side of the cover (it’s a little tricky to get to work, but in theory helps keep users off their phones during the night).

Although I am a warm sleeper, I still enjoy the Eight Sleep’s warming feature before bed and then the adjustment features throughout the night to ensure that I remain comfortable without overheating. Prior to the device, I found myself waking up a few times a week from being overly cold or overly warm, which doesn’t happen anymore.

I also found the sleep-tracking device interesting and compared its findings against my wearables. Compared to Oura and Whoop, the Eight Sleep is consistently a little bit more generous reporting back on my sleep quality, finding that I had longer and higher-quality rest. It provides stats like heart rate, heart rate variability, breath rate, time spent snoring, and sleep latency (how long it takes you to fall asleep).

One new feature is snoring recognition. The Pod 4, unlike previous models, recognizes, exactly when users snore. This could be helpful for those trying new sleep positions or products to mitigate their snoring and want a nightly progress report. It is accurate down to the minute, for those who want detailed data.

Cons

The Pod 4 isn’t cheap, but it might be worth the investment if you want to improve your sleep quality. The Pod itself is $2500, and the paid subscription for an Eight Sleep account costs $17 a month. The company requires that you purchase a subscription for the first year of the Pod. If you choose to cancel the subscription after the first year, you can use the temperature controls but can no longer schedule temperature changes, use the vibrational alarms, or use the Autopilot feature.

In theory, I was excited about the vibration alarm clock feature, but I found that, in practice, it was not personally a great fit. The mattress pad physically vibrates to wake up users without an audible alarm clock. Although the vibration is effective, it is also a little jarring first thing in the morning. The tapping feature works well to shut it off though, so if you prefer the physical wakeup versus a standard alarm, the feature could be a good fit for you.

Overall, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 is worth the investment, as it has the power to level up your sleep quality using high-tech thermoregulation and biometric tracking. Those who already have a wearable might be tempted to get a cheaper thermoregulation device, but they would likely be hard-pressed to find one with the AI-powered adjustment throughout the night that drives higher sleep quality.

The Los Angeles boutique fitness studio is boosting its classes with Aktiv’s Recoil Trainer. Here’s how it’s making a difference

Since its founding in 2015 by fitness coach and studio owner Brooke Bell, PEDAL Studios has made a name for itself in Los Angeles’ boutique fitness scene with its innovative and community-centered approach. With two locations, PEDAL offers a range of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and Spin classes that challenge fitness enthusiasts of all levels. Recently, PEDAL has incorporated Aktiv Solutions’ Recoil Suspension Trainer into its classes, elevating its suspension training offerings and improving operational efficiency.

Bell, who has led over 1,000 suspension training classes herself, is particularly enthusiastic about the addition of the Recoil. “As a studio owner, I’m always looking for tools that elevate the training experience for my clients and coaches. I’ve taught suspension training for years, and incorporating Recoil in our studios has made a major impact in class efficiency. The setup is simple for both the instructor and user adjustments throughout the class.  The Recoils can rotate 360 degrees so they can be set up anywhere on the Gym Rax bridge. Beginner and advanced level classes run far more smoothly when equipment adjustments are easier for our members,” she shares.

Why the Recoil Stands Out

PEDAL Studios initially used TRX for its suspension training but made the switch to Recoil for its superior design and ease of use. According to Bell, “The Recoil has made class transitions much smoother. We no longer have to help clients adjust their straps between movements, which slows down class momentum. After class, we simply recoil the straps up, and the equipment stays out of the way—perfect for the tight turnaround between HIIT and suspension training sessions.”

The Recoil’s patented braking mechanism allows the straps to retract when not in use, a feature that significantly reduces setup time and frees up floor space. This allows for multiple training modalities to be run in the same space with minimal disruption, a crucial factor for multipurpose studios.

Elevating Client Experience

PEDAL’s lead instructor, Sydney Hunter, highlights how the Recoil has transformed their suspension training classes. “The Recoil has raised the bar big time in our training. Its simplicity allows even first-time users to jump right in and keep up with adjustments. The greatest feature, in my opinion, is that when we’re fully booked, I can even have two clients using the same set of straps for single-arm or single-leg work. We get creative, but most importantly, we train for results—and the Recoil helps us achieve more in less time.”

Hunter’s comments reflect the flexibility of Aktiv’s Recoil, which can accommodate a wide range of exercises and fitness levels. The system’s versatility allows instructors to tailor workouts to individual needs, ensuring that everyone, from beginners to advanced athletes, can safely and effectively engage in suspension training.

A Commercial-Grade Solution

Joe Harre, Sales Director for Aktiv’s Performance Segment, explains why the Recoil is particularly well-suited for commercial operators like PEDAL Studios. “The Recoil is more than just an accessory—it’s a commercial-grade piece of equipment designed for longevity. Clients appreciate its durability and professional appearance. Unlike other suspension trainers, there’s no wear and tear on the straps, which means fewer replacements and less maintenance for studio owners.”

The Recoil’s enhanced durability and design not only improve the client experience but also offer studio owners a cost-effective suspension training solution for long-term use. Additionally, its 8 feet of adjustability surpases competing products, helping to accommodate more variability in user height.

Putting the Recoil to the Test

Athletech News tested the Recoil to see how it compared to other suspension trainers on the market. Here’s what stood out:

  • Durability & Presentation: The Recoil offers a sturdy, professional build that outclasses traditional strap systems. Its commercial-grade materials are ideal for high-traffic environments, and its sleek design adds prestige to any fitness space.
  • Superior Adjustability: With 8 feet of adjustability, the Recoil allows for a broad spectrum of exerciser accommodations, and caters to users of all fitness levels. This flexibility makes it a standout option for anyone looking to maximize the versatility of their workouts.
  • Balanced Workouts: The Recoil’s self-adjusting straps ensure even lengths for both sides, reducing the risk of injury and promoting proper form during exercises that require stability, such as dips or push-ups.

While the Recoil’s $299 price point may be a bit higher than some competitors, its premium features, durability, and ease of use make it a worthy investment for serious fitness facilities.

Final Thoughts

The Aktiv Recoil Suspension Trainer has undoubtedly made a significant impact on PEDAL Studios’ operations and client satisfaction. Its blend of functionality, durability, and ease of use positions it as a top choice for commercial gyms and boutique studios alike. For fitness professionals looking to streamline their suspension training offerings, the Recoil is a game-changer that elevates both the client experience and operational efficiency.

Simple Installation and Seamless Integration

One of the standout features of the RUNN Smart Treadmill Sensor is its easy installation process. Within just 5 minutes, you can transform any treadmill into a smart device by attaching the sensor, which uses both ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity to communicate with fitness apps. This makes RUNN compatible with a wide range of virtual training apps like Zwift, Kinomap, and Rouvy, as well as Garmin devices. Whether you’re using a motorized or non-motorized treadmill, the RUNN sensor provides accurate speed, incline, and cadence tracking, eliminating the need to invest in a new treadmill.

How to Install and Use the RUNN Smart Treadmill Sensor

Installing and using the RUNN Smart Treadmill Sensor is incredibly simple, making it accessible for users of all experience levels. In just a few minutes, you can turn your treadmill into a smart device that tracks your workout data. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

Installation Process

  1. Unbox the Sensor: Start by unboxing the RUNN sensor, which comes with adhesive strips, a micro-USB charging cable, and calibration stickers.
  2. Charge the Device: Before installation, ensure the sensor is fully charged using the included micro-USB cable. The sensor’s battery lasts up to 15 hours, so you won’t need to charge it frequently once it’s set up.
  3. Attach the Sensor: Locate the treadmill belt and attach the RUNN sensor using the adhesive strips. Place the sensor on the treadmill’s frame, near the running surface. Make sure it’s positioned properly so the sensor can accurately track the belt’s movement.
  4. Apply the Calibration Stickers: To ensure the RUNN sensor accurately tracks your speed, cadence, and incline, apply the provided calibration stickers to the treadmill belt as instructed. This allows the sensor to detect movement and provide precise data.
  5. Connect via Bluetooth or ANT+: Once installed, the sensor broadcasts data via Bluetooth and ANT+. Connect the RUNN sensor to your preferred fitness app or smart device, such as Zwift, Garmin, or Kinomap.

Using the RUNN Sensor

  1. Sync with Fitness Apps: Open your preferred fitness app, such as Zwift or Garmin, and pair the RUNN sensor via Bluetooth or ANT+. The sensor will transmit speed, incline, and cadence in real time, allowing you to track your workout stats and integrate them with virtual training apps.
  2. Track Heart Rate with Apple Watch: If you use an Apple Watch, download the heartbeatz Connect app to sync your heart rate data with your fitness app. This eliminates the need for a chest strap and allows you to close your rings while monitoring your workout.
  3. Monitor Your Progress: As you run, the sensor will automatically track your speed, cadence, and incline. The data will appear in your chosen app, making it easy to follow along with your progress in real time.

Key Takeaways:

Dr. Lipman’s wellness center is focused on improving longevity through holistic and integrative medicine. But how does it compare to competitors?

Dr. Frank Lipman has made a name for himself in the world of longevity through his practice of integrative and functional medicine. A New York Times bestselling author of seven health-focused books, like The New Rules of Aging Well, Dr. Lipman has spent the past 40 years researching and exploring best practices for living longer, healthier lives.

He founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City and advises wellness companies like The Well and Hearty. Athletech News visited Eleven Eleven Wellness Center to try out its services, including an InBody Scan, Red Light Therapy, a One Mind Brain Mapping Program and Shiftwave.

Pros

Although I was new to preventative and integrative medicine, Dr. Lipman’s team made me feel comfortable going through each service in the wellness center. I started with the InBody Scan, which was a surprisingly in-depth view of my body composition. It uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to measure the amount of body water by reading low-level currents. The scan itself involves standing on a scale-like device for several minutes while it takes your measurements.

Almost immediately, users receive an in-depth view into their body composition, including body fat, muscle mass and even water weight. The results that I received were so detailed that it even showed that my dominant leg had slightly more muscle mass than the other. The InBody Scan also provides a holistic view of your health; instead of merely encouraging weight loss, it also encourages weight gain if your body fat percentage is too low.

Next, I tried Eleven Eleven Wellness Center’s Right Light Therapy. Unlike some red light therapy services, it involved lying down in a machine, rather than standing between two panels. I found this experience much more comfortable than the alternative and felt rejuvenated after the services.

I then explored a new service called Shiftwave, a nervous system training technology that applies pulsed pressure waves to the body to rebalance the nervous system. Although I was unsure about the efficacy of the treatment after one use, I found myself in a deeper relaxation state after trying the guided meditation that syncs to the patterns and frequencies of pulsed pressure waves.

Lastly, I was brought to a quiet room where I underwent a brain scan. A dome-shaped device was tightly attached to my head, and I shut my eyes for the scanning process. The technology behind the tool is brain mapping or QEEG (Quantitative Electroenceophalogram), which maps brain activity. According to Dr. Lipman, it helps patients understand how your body responds to stimulus using HRV analytics and heart rhythm dynamics predicts anxiety, depression and stress levels. After a week or so, I received results that mapped my brain and predicted my levels of depression and anxiety.

After visiting many wellness centers for similar services, I found that the biggest benefit of Dr. Lipman’s office was having a medical perspective on-site. Instead of just a wellness center where one can seek out longevity-focused services like red light, cold plunges and nutritional consultations, Eleven Eleven feels more like a doctor’s office with the added benefit of these services woven into its practice.

Cons

Although I found the process enjoyable, I remain doubtful about the accuracy of the brain scan. Many medical studies have not found sufficient evidence to assess if such brain scans can provide an accurate report of anxiety levels and other cognitive disorders. Some of the claims on Dr. Lipman’s website also seemed a little too good to be true from the brain scan report, including improving clarity and decision-making, increasing speed of thought and awareness, and combating burnout. Before reserving judgment on the QEEG report, I would need additional scientific proof through studies.

Second, while I enjoyed the Shiftwave chair, I think there is more of an opportunity for those with acute anxiety or PTSD to find comfort in the chair, rather than using it as an everyday health service. However, if one were able to use it before sleep or during particularly stressful periods of time, it may help provide short-term relief through a meditative-like state with the pulsed pressure waves.

One downside of the services offered by Dr. Lipman’s office is their prices. For example, one ShiftWave session costs $50, as does one Red Light Therapy session. Other wellness centers offer services like Red Light Therapy for far less.

Overall, I was impressed by Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, which offers so many more services than the ones that I tried, including nutrition, sleep, stress management, and social connections. For those seeking to have a more holistic and preventative approach to their health, Eleven Eleven Wellness Center might be the perfect one-stop shop.

The brand’s weighted vests and clothing can level up your everyday workouts with extra weight

Omorpho was founded in 2017 by Ben Williams and Stefan Olander, who had a goal to reinvent the prototypical weighted vest. Frustrated by unevenly distributed weight in vests, Olander and Williams developed a new vest with MicroLoad technology, where small amounts of weight are evenly distributed across all of its garments.

Now, Omorpho also makes G-Wear, which is apparel with built-in MicroLoad spheres throughout that can be worn alone or with a vest. The apparel is designed to level up strength training, runs, hikes or any other workout that could benefit from a little extra weight. Athletech News put both the Omorpho G-Vest and G-Wear to the test.

Pros

Omorpho’s G-Vest is form-fitting and flexible, comfortable even during long runs. For those who care about fashion, the vest also comes in multiple colors, like black, purple, blue and gray.  Some colors even have a subtle trim of illuminated fabric for easy visibility in the dark. The G-Vest also comes in different sizes, which makes it easy and comfortable to add a little weight to your workout, particularly for someone on the smaller side.

It has shoulder straps and side-cinch pull cords that make it easy to tighten the garment against your body. The man’s vest is 10 pounds, and the woman’s is 5 pounds for the G-Vest and 6 and 3 respectively for the G-Vest Sport (the lighter version of the vest).

The G-Vest has built-in extra weight through small, raised spheres over the fabric. Despite the extra weight, the clothing is soft and stretchy enough for HIIT or strength workouts. I was worried about washing the items after sweaty workouts, but they can be thrown in the washer and dryer along with other clothes. The spheres did not hurt or rub against my skin, and overall I found wearing the items more comfortable than I expected.

Both apparel items were great for making your standard workouts a little bit harder. I have increasingly seen weighted vests on runners, and now I understand why–it’s an easy way to improve your strength and endurance. I also felt stronger wearing the vest during bodyweight workouts or strength training in a subtle but effective way. Neither the G-Wear clothing nor the G-Vest were bulky or unwieldy but I noticed myself feeling stronger after multiple wears.

Cons

The G-Vest’s premium price of $279 for women and $299 for men, is more expensive than many other weighted vests. If you’re newer to workout vests, you might be a little less ready to invest in such an expensive piece of equipment.

As for the G-Wear, although the clothing itself was soft and stretchy and the added weight evenly distributed, I found wearing clothes with spheres all over the fabric a strange sensation, particularly for the leggings. When I ran or did standing workouts, the spheres did not bother me, but during yoga or mat workouts, I found the spheres uncomfortable. I would prefer wearing a weighted vest over standard workout wear, but for those who are doing more dynamic workouts, the apparel could level up your goals. The apparel was more reasonably priced than the vests, ranging from $99-$150, but still more expensive than other weighted clothing.

Overall, if you’re ready to commit to leveling up your workout with a weighted vest, Omorpho’s G-Vest is a premium product that will help you increase your endurance, build strength, and improve your agility. If you want a little extra weight in your apparel and don’t mind a raised texture of your clothing, check out G-Wear.
